I just got a PS2 yesterday (the old fat one) so I could play my psx games after my PSone died about 2 years ago.
At first it refused to read psx discs, but I found that it will read them perfectly if on its side (vertical)
Has anyone else came across this? Is there anything I can do to get it to read the discs when horizontal, as that's how I want it to sit?
BTW PS2 games will play when its is horizontal or vertical.
PS2 will only play PSX games when vertical

My friend's ps2 is like that as well, but his is an early model ps2 and has been played heavily.

Re: PS2 will only play PSX games when vertical
From what I understand, the PS1 games are harder for the PS2 to read.
That vertical shit is weird, though. I remember when I was playing FF7, I made it to the second disc but it wouldn't load. I contacted Squaresoft tech help and they told me to turn the PS1 on it's side, vertically, and that might get it to load... ¿Que?
But anyways, you might wanna clean your PS2's laser. It's not too hard to take it apart and put it back together again.

The PS1 games are CD format vs just about all PS2 games in DVD format. One of my PS2's also sometimes has problems reading REZ which is a PS2 CD blue disc. Why your CD reads work only sideways is strange other than maybe better heat dissipation.
Other than taking PS2 apart and tweaking laser, cleaning the laser with a GOOD BRAND CD style cleaner is the other easier option.

Clean the laser. Mine had the exact same problem, not much a big problem since I have a few PS1s but it came a bit of a problem when I needed to boot a PSX game to run the liberty hack to freemcboot my PS2. I opened it up, cleaned the laser with a cotton bud and some 100% and it worked perfectly.

Re: PS2 will only play PSX games when vertical
My PS2 has a similar problem. It's an older "fat" model so it has trouble reading "CD-Rom games." These include all PS1 games (which have the black coating) and all the earlier PS2 games (that have the blue coating).
If you look on the back of all your PS2 game cases, you will see either a "Compact Disc" or a "DVD-Rom" logo towards the bottom-right. This will tell you if the game will have the hard-to-read, blue coating (CD-Rom) or the more PS2-friendly, silver coating (DVD-Rom).
Why they weren't just putting all PS2 games on DVD-Rom right from the start is beyond me.

If you remember, DVDs were still fairly new back then. There was a big price disparity between pressing a DVD versus a CD. If the game didn't need more space than a CD, that's what it went on.Weekend_Warrior wrote:Why they weren't just putting all PS2 games on DVD-Rom right from the start is beyond me.

Re: PS2 will only play PSX games when vertical
Hi, sorry if I resume a topic that is 2 years old, but I noticed that this weird issue affects also my ps2 slim: ps2 games loads in both positions (vertical or horizontal) while psx ones will boot ONLY if I place the ps2 in vertical (once started, I can even put the ps2 back in the orizontal position and everything is ok). I tried to clean my lens with a q tip, but no luck. Has anyone some explanation or suggestion to this issue? Thanks in advance
Re: PS2 will only play PSX games when vertical
Try cleaning the laser again, but lightly dampen a Q Tip with some rubbing alcohol. Lightly touch the dampened Q Tip to the eye and twist it a couple of time. Then flip the Q Tip around and use the dry side on it.

Clean the laser and adjust the pot. It should work perfectly fine after.
