I'm thinking about getting the VGA output from my Dreamcast but I have a couple of questions,

First, I only have LCD monitors these days. I heard that VGA looks better on CRT. In this case, should I still bother?

It doesn't look as good bit it's still fantastic, this all mostly depends on how good the quality of your LCD screen is and its upconversion methods.

Second, what's the difference between the VGA Cable and the VGA Box, that are both on sale in the Racketboy store? Is it just the simple matter that the VGA Box can do everything, while the cable only does VGA?

Finally, say I hook up the VGA cable to my PC monitor, how does the sound output work?

Sound output can either be taken from the AV Jacks or from the line out 3/4 mm headphone style PC Speaker Jack on the VGA BOX, or from the Headphone Style 3/4 mm PC Speaker Jack.

Hello,

I just got my VGA cable from the RacketBoy store and its awesome! I had one problem, my HDTV doesn't have a VGA input, just HDMI and component. Unfortunately, the TV doesn't support RGB via the component either, so the VGA to component cords I tried didn't work.

Rather than get a VGA to component transcoder, I decided to pickup an VGA to HDMI converter, since I wasn't using the HDMI input yet. I went to monoprice.com and picked up this model for about $40:

I just wanted to report that it works GREAT! I thought it might look a little janky because its no-name electronics from China, but its really awesome. Anyway, just wanted people to know in case they run into the same problem.

I have a Sony Wega 4:3 HD CRT, It is model number KV-32HS500.

I have personally confirmed that the Dreamcast Lightgun does work on a CRT VGA monitor.

Okay couple questions:

This has been tested on a Sony CRT 34XBR960 and did not work for light guns.
How about other CRT TVs might work?

>> No, I tried that out with House of the Dead. I didn't expect it would work. Old light gun tech is generally known not to be compatible with HDTV refresh rates.

*** When you tested that VGA to HDMI converter and played Dreamcast House of the Dead, you mentioned the light gun would not work. Was that with a CRT HD Tube TV or a LCD TV?

Vga cable and audio cable that would work for a connection between my computer and sony bravia tv? can someone please find me a vga cable and audio cable that would enable me to use my sony bravia tv as a monitor for my computer? thank you! also, the wire needs to be long maybe around 6 feet.

If your Bravia has a direct VGA in then pretty much a regular analog VGA Cable would work.
Audio cable with 3.5 plugs from computer sound card speaker out/line out and then to audio input on TV.

Cables common at any electronics store such as Frys.

If no VGA input maybe a VGA-Componnent Transcoder or VGA-HDMI box.

Just got my VGA cable in the mail, I ordered the cheaper one without the S-Video and RCA outs because I already own those as separate cables. Looks great on my Dell E771a monitor. Bought a nice 3.5mm male-to-male stereo audio cable off Monoprice and it arrived on the same day. Just plug the audio cable into the box and from there into the line-in on my sound card and it sounds great on my PC speakers. The visual quality it brings out is amazing, and really shows off the power of the Dreamcast.


Over all the construction of the VGA box itself feels somewhat cheap and flimsy, but the audio and video quality is way better than my old television set.

I tried it with my old 19" computer monitor and it works and looks great but the only reason i bought it is for playing DC on my bigscreen, does anyone know wat could be up with it, im thinking its the monitor cable im using to my TV

Suspect your Sony Bravia does not support Dreamcast resolution of 640x480. To confirm TV VGA, try hooking up higher resolution Computer/Laptop direct to VGA input. If you have a pic than either a Transcoder to up Resolution or stick with computer monitor. But hey if that computer monitor is a CRT your Dreamcast Lightguns will work!

It explicitly supports 480p, handles that resolution from my 360 with no problem, and even runs in 640x480 straight out of my damn PC. I plan on getting that VGA to HDMI transcoder from Monoprice, but if that doesn't work, someone will die.

I almost feel as though my only purpose in life from this point on is to get my DC running in VGA on my TV.

I do see that a lot of newer LCD HD's don't support 640x480 mode. Most computers put out a higher resolution, so this resolution got dropped.

Another (more expensive though) option is VGA to Component Transcoder, everything stays analog.
