We all know that in a genre(s) lacking in narrative as shoot 'em ups no game is worth its salt without solid action-assorting music. I'm collecting/ripping a special library for shmup games, and taking the liberty of including on-rails, light-gun, topdown/isometric and run-n-guns (and exclusing TPS), so far I have music for the following:
Aero Blasters
After Burner II+III+Climax+SST Band
Air Zonk
Alien Hominid
Apidya
BangaiO+Spirits
Cannon Fodder
Cannon Spike
Confidential Mission
Contra 4
Cotton 2
Devastator
Eco Fighters
Einhänder
Ether Vapor
Everyday Shooter
Firehawk Thexder
Geometry Wars: Galaxies
Giga Wing 2
Gunbird 2
Gunblade NY
Gunbuster
House of the Dead 1+2+3
Hurrican
Ikargua+Radiant Silvergun
Keio Flying Squadron
Ketsui Death Label
Loaded
Lords/Gate of Thunder
Macross M3
Macross VF-X 2
Mars Matrix
Metal Slug 7
Metal Slug X
Panzer Dragoon+Zwei+Orta
Philosoma
R-Type Leo
Project Raiden
Project X
Raptor: Call of the Shadows
Rez
Robo Aleste
Sega Tunes Vectorman
Sexy Parodius
Shienryu
Shock Troopers 2nd Squad
Silent Scope
Silpheed+The Lost Planet
Sky Target
Sol-Feace
Soldat
Soulstar
Space Harrier
Starblade
Super Darius II
Super Stardust
Tactical Fighters
Tempest 2000
The Terminator
Thunder Force I+II+III+IV+V+VI
Trigger Heart Exelica
Turrican I+II+III
Tyrian 2000
Under Defeat
Vectorman Remixed
Viewpoint
Virtua Cop 1+2
Xenon 2
Zero Gunner 2
I would consider most of the music found in such game 'listenable'.. But I've not scratched the surface of arrange albums or the topsy-turvy Darius/Gdarius/Parodius games. If you have suggestions feel free to share!

Re: Shmups with good music?
I highly recommend the Raiden IV soundtrack. It comes with the game, but can be found easily online.

Thanks for mentioning Raiden IV. Tried ripping the music from its predecessor with no luck. It's a shame no PC port pf IV was made because playing on LCD monitors can be terrific if you have the swivel mount. Then again I have a HDMI->DVI cable so there's no excuse for me not to get the game

Re: Shmups with good music?
Well, I can't really offer any suggestions because I don't play many shmups but this website USED to be a good place for listening to a wide variety of songs from those games: http://www.counterstrike-source-skins.i ... index.html
It seems now that the radio function is offline... but if that comes back up this is a fantastic way to introduce yourself to songs you've never heard before.

Soukyugurentai
Night Striker
Layer Section/Galactic Attack/Rayforce (all the same game)
Not really a shmup but Senko no Ronde has a great sound track.
