Online Gaming: Impossible to get into

Post by fingersmaloy »

Being able to play a game online with my brother on the other side of the planet is totally awesome. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about playing online in massive groups with people you don't know.

I got Marvel vs. Capcom 2 the other day. I own ALL of the Capcom vs. fighting games, and I've been playing fighting games in general for like fifteen years and video games for like 22 years. So it's not like I'm new to the concept. So why is it that when I play an online match, I spend 99 percent of the time being juggled by volleys of death, unable to even MOVE? How much work does it take to get to the point where you can actually PLAY the game with people?

It's not just this game. Today I was playing Uncharted 2. Played co-op with my brother and had a blast. Then I tried the Deathmatch with a bunch of strangers. Ten straight minutes of running and dying without knowing why I had died.

Online gaming is impossible to get into because these servers are infested with freaks. I'm not great at games, by any means, but with DECADES of experience, shouldn't I at least be able to play a game and have some kind of chance? How obsessive do you have to be to get anything fun out of this?

To be good at online gaming, you don't necessarily have to be great at the game, but you do have to try it for a while. If you're really interested in it, you're going to have to dedicate some time to it. Also, if you're not used to online gaming very much, it can be a bit difficult to adjust to. I've been playing online multiplayer in games for more than a decade now, and from time to time I'll get stomped, but I've had a lot of experience dealing with human players, so I tend to fair better than most. Though I also haven't tried it with fighting games...mainly because none have really grabbed me for a while.

Some people are better than you online, Big deal, Keep playing, you will get the hang of it eventually
For example, my first Multiplayer shooter was team Fortress 2,
For about three months, I ran around, got to know the levels, died a ton, then I finally got my first kill, then I started to get better, now I am in Division 2, close to the top of PS3 team Fortress 2
At the moment I am playing Tribes 2 online, I suck, TERRIBLY.

If you want an online game that is fun but hard to get into/master:

Counter Strike/CS Source.

This game will piss you off until you get good. Otherwise yes, online gaming is pretty much learning the rules of the game down memorized, learn the most common weaknesses people have, learn the map WELL (if its a shooter), be able to adapt after each death.

I'll stress again, be able to ADAPT. To be flexible is invaluable.

One of the biggest challenges for online games (barring fighters) is the fact that you're usually joining in the middle. So the other players have the advantages of already having extra weapons and already having some momentum. When you try to ramp yourself up they're already in the zone, and they'll blindside you. The other thing is that you need to get used to having eyes in the back of your head. Playing multiplayer is very different from single player; people will shoot you from behind constantly. You need to have a good level of situational awareness to keep from being blindsided, which is where the majority of your deaths will come from.

The story was going well, and then you ended with it being not PC TF2. Are the other versions of TF2 even relevant?

Learn to block and stop whining just because other people are better than you. You'll never be able to compete with anyone if you don't do both.

Online gaming isn't the problem. You just need to get better at gaming so you can stand a chance. The way you give up so easily and make excuses gives off the impression that you aren't really trying to win.

The next time you are playing games and get your ass kicked, calm down and try to figure out why that happened. What mistakes did you make? What part of the game don't you understand good enough? What did the opponent do to beat you so easily? Try to come up with a counter move for it. If you manage to play with the goal of improving, any time something goes wrong for you, do your best to learn from it. Keep this up long enough and you will continue to improve until you find yourself better than the average player.

As my friend likes to say: Your going to have to put in the butt time.

The main game I play online is Left 4 Dead. When I first got in to versus mode I was horrible. If I wasn't getting killed by the other team constantly I was getting kicked for making mistakes.

These days if I go in to a public game I end up with casual players calling me "Pro" (a term I hate). I know all of the common spots that people spawn in (in L4D the infected get to choose their own spawn points), I can watch someone on the other team and take advantage of their weaknesses. I can mow down someone on the other team as soon as they spawn because I can pin-point them based on the noise they make. Often times I get accused of "wall hacking" (on 360!) because I shoot people through walls all of the time. I can reverse-grief because I know all of the glitches.

Just tonight I was playing against a team that decided it would be funny to camp in a small room that the infected can not enter. So after giving them a chance to leave said room I decided to put an end to their attempt to grief us. I used a glitch and spawned right next to them and eventually was able to kill them all off on my own. Hopefully they learned their lesson: toying with me is not a bright idea.

Back to the point of the thread though: You need practice and lots of it if you expect to be competitive at this high level. Otherwise just stick to playing with your friends because your just going to get frustrated and lose interest in the game all together.

Probably not but I very much congratulate for his skill and recommend him to try PC TF2.

Everyone already said it. If you get killed all te time is not the fault of others players but yours. Also I would prefer that you avoid the word "freaks" when you talk about people you play online. You know, like everyone in this site.
