No More Heroes 2 impressions and thoughts

Post by brickiemart »

What a week for gamers, Mass Effect 2, Tatsunoko v. Capcom, and No More Heroes 2. I had to exert some self control at the game shop today and only came home with NMH2. I've finally had time to put some time into it (hour and a half) and here what I think so far.

Great stuff! You gotta love it when you have high expectations for a game and it still manages to impress you. Grasshopper Manufacture really listened to the fan feedback and improved on everything that was criticized in the first game. The combat is much more smooth and fun. There are multiple enemy types on a screen at one time now. The graphics look a bit more polished, I've already lost count of the sexual innuendos, and the game oozes character and style that is expected from Suda51.

I won't give away much and really can't since I have only had one short sitting with the game, but the premise of it (so far) seems to be the same. There has not been any open world yet; there's a map system that allows you to chose where you want to go in the game and after a load you're there. What I've seen of the minigames is great, they have one based around the fictional anime Travis likes that is in the form of a doujin shmup. The others play like 8-bit NES games.

Has anyone else had the chance to check this out? The timing of the release was terrible for me, I have a lot of work to do so my playtime is going to be limited. If any of you liked the first game at all, even remotely, check out the sequel.

My copy's arriving tomorrow from Amazon. Now that I've got Mass Effect 2 finished I'll be set to devote the rest of the week to this game.

I cheated and played it all weekend, up to the final mission. So when it arrived last night I installed the DLC from the retail copy, did those couple of missions, then saved the galaxy AGAIN. Motherfuckers won't let me have two seconds alone before the galaxy is in peril again.

The jumping portions of the game with Shinobu are the only part of the game I hate so far. How many 3d games have Grasshopper Manufacture done that feature jumps; NMH 1, Fatal Frame 4, Killer 7, all without platforming... I can't think of any of their 3d games that do. I'm up to ranking four, which guy was number eight, the rankings jump around so much that I can not remember?

Not wanting to spoil anything, but it was the second Shinobu fight. And I agree, the Shinobu platforming is horrible. They were nice enough to have invisible walls so you wouldn't just fall, but it's so hard sometimes to jump where you want. The camera keeps putting it at an angle.
