Well, the 2600 is the best known of all their machines, released back in 1977. You can find titles like Combat, River Raid, Defender, and so on. A lot of old arcade ports and the like. The later consoles aren't as well known, so I figure the 2600 is what you're thinking of.

my dad use to have an atari that i played and it had cool games like centipede donkey kong pac man ms pac man. he gave it away a long time ago though

Yeah, that sounds like an Atari 2600, also known as a VCS, but just to make sure, have you tried asking him about it?

i asked him about it and he said something about an atari xebs or something

That's an Atari XE Game System, otherwise known as the Atari XEGS. I can't find one on eBay at the moment, and they're not really something I know a lot about, but I'm sure somebody here does.
