The CRT choice

Post by RCBH928 »

Hello,

I just started playing a game I have been waiting to play before it was out, Assassin's Creed(the first),

So after playing some retro games, Wii games, GameCube games, I returned to the 360 .
The game looks really epic and amazing, I love epic setting(and anything epic really, and I hope this is the right word I am looking for), but I can see how my CRT TV is holding back a lot of the graphics.

I can't make a comparison , but I want those who played games HD games on both CRT and HD tv's how much am I missing. The thing that bothers me most is how tiny the text is in HD games.

I can buy an HDtv if i wanted to, but I really like this one. I can play all the VC, Dreamcast, N64, VHS no worries, and I like being old school. Plus its not that old of a tv something like 5-6 years old and the picture is really good.

I can't have 2 TV's, because there is no place for it, not to mention there is nothing HD that I watch other than 360 games, I got no bluray player, no HD channels, and I don't see its worth the investment really, because I still find DVD of a really high quality.

but back to the main topic, how do you feel/think about CRT tv used for HD games.
I can tell you that its OK when the games are not putting the most of the console with simpler graphics like Halo and Viva Pinata , but when the games are trying to push the console to do its best with a lot of detail like in Assassin's Creed and Bayonetta you can notice it that you need clearer picture.
I am using component .

Old CRT's are nice for light gun games, but that's it. For everything else, I like a big HDTV. If you are forced to choose one TV only, I'd suggest losing the ability to play the old light gun games, so you can play everything else nice and big and sharp.

Yeah, you will need to look into some kind of upscaling, otherwise non HD consoles will look like shit. I use the XRGB-3 and it does a fantastic job. RGB is the ideal connection type but if all you have is S-video, that works pretty well too. Good luck.

Honestly, the only problem I ever had using a CRT on new HD consoles was the fact that a lot of games will letterbox. Otherwise, I love just a standard CRT over an HD.

2 monitors not an option? How do you feel about XRGB2 and spending lots of money and moding you systems as well as tracking down cables?

I have a HD and SD CRT, but my lo def stuff still looks bad on the HD so I cannot recomend buying a used 1080i HD CRT even though my 360 and PC look great on it. Can you play your 360 on your computer monitor? That could be an option for those few games you want the full effect.

I got a 22 Samsung but it accepts VGA and DVI

I don't care for gun games,
but you are the first I hear that says HD puts a better signal than the old CRT of SD.

Well, if you bought a really good CRT like a Sony Trinitron and used the highest quality cables to hook up your consoles, they would look great. You also wouldn't have any input lag. However CRT's dont get bigger than 36", and the input lag is not that bad with the XRGB upscaler.

I actually used to have a 36" Sony Trinitron back when it was new and I would connect all my consoles with component or s-video cables. I remember it looking really good but not as good as my current setup (52" Sharp Aquos HDTV, and everything hooked up with RGB cables being upscaled to 1080p with reduced input lag).

I have a Sony Trinitron as far as I can tell,
and HD crts are no where to be found around here

I don't think its worth it to buy a new HDTV to play 360 games only,
How do you guys feel about HD games on SD tvs?

Okay, I did my own testing,
I put the game on a huge projector HDtv in the living room, at 1080i(didn't know component does not support 1080p)

I was right, you can't really notice THAT much of a difference in the picture, its not a $500 difference . Yes its a better picture but not worth all that money, but wait a minute!

This is funny, while you expect HD would you give you a higher superior picture quality, it only shows in the tiny tiny details.

For example, the text is legible now! Now the symbols on the map are finally clear.
For example, the eagle high points, whatever they call them, I thought they were a fork symbol in on SD. On HD It was a symbol of an eagle with sharp edges. The Kingdom's symbol on SD looked like a ying-yang symbol, on HD I can see its mountains.

I think the publishers do this on purpose, they make text and symbols extra small so when you look at it on SD tv you think, man, this sucks. I must get an HDtv. While you don't, they should make text and other stuff bigger.

As someone that is currently making their own game for xbox live indie games I can say it is a pain in the ass making sure that everything is readable for people with SDTVs.
