I use Darik's Boot And Nuke for drive wiping. At work there were usually lots of parts floating around and the occasional hard drive that could have customer's sensitive information that we'd used at some point. Anytime someone new dug through my desk to borrow something they'd usually ask why I had a floppy labeled DBAN with a skull drawn on it.
But it's five megs!

That won't fit on a Floppy, that won't fit on a floppy at all you madman!
A floppy? Isn't that when you're too tired to get it up?

Is that because you want to destroy everything when the drive gets the click of death and takes your zip disk out with it?

Those things made me fucking rage. I'm glad that they weren't around for long before the lowly 128MB USB memory stick came along and rendered them obsolete.

I thought it was the CD-R and the CD-RW that made Zip obsolete.

I always saw zip as superior tech to cd-r/cd-rw. With zip you could always write/read data on the fly. No need to finalise the disc, or use multi-session. Much much faster. The only problem with Zip was that they were prone to failure (the click of death) and the drives would kill whatever Zip disc was being used at the time.

1.0.7 does in the old versions. I didn't actually look at the new version. I didn't realize I made that disk so long ago.

Pfft, that's an 8 incher for floppy or these babies for hard drives.

When I had a zip drive for school use, I never had a problem with my drive, other than it being a super slow parallel port version. Never had a disk die on me either. Now, the school Macs with Zip drives in them? Half were clicking all the time, probably because of abuse or other students shoving discs in them that had been sitting naked in their bags or something.

I had an external drive die of the click, and an internal one die of the click, I got the internal thinking it would have something to do with external drives but they both suffered the same fate. I would keep my zips in their plastic cases at all time, except when transferring between systems. I just think the very nature of the technology means a build up of crap on communal systems is bound to happen, once you get it into your zip that's it it's gonna crap out on you. Fucking hated the damn things. Hated em so much I would only store non-important data. If I had to make the data travel I had a box of 25 floppies just in case and would split the file.
