360 E74 Fix?
360 E74 Fix?
So, my cousin sent me this Xbox 360, he sent it to Microsoft trying to fake the Warranty sticker, they sent it back with a piece of paper that basically said screw off
. Anyway, This E74 thing, I hear that the ANA/HANA Scaler chip causes it. Well, more precisely the crappy lead free solder they have to use. so, IS there any good re flowing methods out there that DON'T require a $3000 rework station? I do have a heat gun, but it is VERY high temp, 750-1500 watt two temp. would this work? or would I be better off re flowing in a toaster oven?
Re: 360 E74 Fix?
Wrap it in a towel for 30 mins while left on.
Come back to it. Turn it off and let cool down.
Turn it on 30 mins later. It will work. I have done this 3 times now and had no issues with the e74 on the 360's I did do this with since.

I'd advise against this. You would be better off taking it apart and starting with the corners with the heat gun, gradually warm the motherboard up, moving in circles, towards the middle getting closer for about 10 minutes, then start to cool the motherboard down gradually, by doing the same thing but in reverse. Leave the board to cool down completely, then re-assemble.Japhei wrote:Wrap it in a towel for 30 mins while left on.

By doing the 'towel-trick' you're putting other components under excessive strain whilst there is power going through the system. BAD IDEA. You're putting the system through strain it isn't designed to handle. It's best to heat it up without power, plus you have more control.
It's no substitute for having it professionally reworked with an infrared BGA workstation. However, cost prohibits. You could find somewhere that does it for you, it's definitely worth it.

Re: 360 E74 Fix?
Neither of your ideas are great, I was thinking about a custom made rework oven, that would be Ideal.
1) the towel trick is useless, temp fix, not fixing the core problem.
2) A heatgun is a fine method of doing it, but you don't have much control over the temp unless you have a good gun (I do not)

Re: 360 E74 Fix?
I never said my idea was great, let's face it, without access to a real infrared workstation (IE one that can gradually heat up the entire board reflow the BGA and cool the board gradually again) you're a bit stuffed. All the 'fixes' on the internet are temporary and aren't going to solve the problem unless you rework with higher quality solder. It's the poor quality of the lead free solder that's the problem.
