Tempest 2000...THIS is the great Atari Jaguar game??

Post by ReddMcKnight »

OK, ever since I got my Jaguar, all of you have been telling me to get Tempest 2000, so I finally did. I tried it out, and honestly, I don't see what's so great about this game. Anyone care to tell me what makes this game so great? I will, however, admit that the game is above average.

Not a very in Depth thinking game, more of reactionary stay alive game. Individual preference.

I guess I like it cause it harkens back to the days of Retro gaming with the likes of Original tempest, Robotron, Galaxian etc. I have the PC 2000 version, Typhoon 2001 and PS1 Tempest X and love them all. Great game to run at car shows with all the great sounds and music.

It's the only home port worth mentioning of an arcade classic. And being an arcade classic, it doesn't require much power, so the Jags deficiencies aren't really noticed.

Tempest 2000 was a solid remake that hits many people on a subconscious level. Like Rez the whole package is immersive. It is not for everyone, but other than AvP it is the best game on the console by far.

I have played most of the consoles library, and it is the only one I return to frequently. And I dont even like the original Tempest - Asteroids fan.

Some history for you:

Tempest 2000, though initially dismissed by the creator of the Atari Jaguar, is generally regarded as one of the best video games for the system. The game received critical acclaim from such video game magazines such as GamePro, Electronic Gaming Monthly (won EGM's Game of the Month award and was awarded Best Jaguar Game of 1994), and Diehard GameFan. Of particular critical acclaim was the game's intense techno music soundtrack. A separate soundtrack CD with newly-done versions was also released; this was the basis for the audio for all conversions to come.

The PC version has some bad bugs - like not registering your score correctly and the Bot just doing what it wants.

If you want to play a PC version, the fan made Typhoon 2001 is the best you are going to get:

I recently got the Typhoon version. Does look better in SVGA though a little choppy in mouse reaction.
