Virtua Fighter 3tb not booting

I got this loose disc of Virtua Fighter 3tb through the Charity Auction, it's understandable it's kinda beat up, but I happened to have a friend over while trying it out and he said he had the same game but for some reason it refused to start.
So I put in the disc and the "Produced by or under license from SEGA" screen appears, the screen flashes white and it returns to the Dreamcast main menu. This means it does recognize the disc is official, it does no such thing when you put in a non-Dreamcast disc of course.

Did my friend hax -I mean- jinx it?

It sounds like it recognizes it, but then has too much trouble reading it. I'd say try cleaning the disc, the system lens, then perhaps a disc polish/scratch remover.

I would definitely try cleaning disc then system lens if cleaning disc doesn't fix it.

I too have the same problem with Dreamcast game "Evolution" part 1. I boot up the system it say sega and gives me a black screen. The VMU says Evolution but no game start. I tried Fight Force 2 (worst game) and it work fine. my game is that scratch but minimal. I put alcohol to scrub the dirt off and scratches, but same result.

Dreamcasts are well known to be finicky. VF3 won't boot on my DC, but it will on my girlfriend's, even after I've cleaned the lens and tweaked the laser. DCs are strange machines.

It's usually not the Dreamcast system. When it comes to Virtua Fighter 3TB, early Sega-All-Stars Sonic Adventure reprints and a few others there was actually a huge pressing error at one of the US GD-ROM plants which resulted in poorly pressed discs. Any discs from this pressing refused to boot in most later revision 2 or booted only to crash in most heavily worn revision 1/0 Dreamcast systems.

Yeah, my copy of Hydro Thunder randomly crashes on either of my Dreamcasts. Definitely a pressing error for me and probably one for you.
