Well... The Sega Saturn is officially the best thing ever.
Well... The Sega Saturn is officially the best thing ever.
Once I finally got some good games for it, I sat down, fired up Virtua Fighter 2, and had a much better experience than I had first anticipated. Playing games on the Saturn is like taking a nostalgic walk through the arcade. I never thought that I would enjoy the Saturn this much. If it weren't for this website, I would have never thought about getting this. I had several doubts for this when I first found out about this system, and they were all proven very very wrong. All I can say is thanks to all you guys: For the advice, and the motivation. This is awesome.

I only just realized that NetLink games will be active for as long as analogue phone lines exist. I seriously would consider an analogue phone line just for that, if I personally knew anyone into Sega Saturn that is.

Are there still online hosts for those games, or were servers a thing of the future at that point?crux wrote:I only just realized that NetLink games will be active for as long as analogue phone lines exist. Actually the Saturn NetLink games are direct dial games, meaning you directly call the other Saturn console across town/the state/the country/the globe and voila you're connected.newt42 wrote:Are there still online hosts for those games, or were servers a thing of the future at that point?crux wrote:I only just realized that NetLink games will be active for as long as analogue phone lines exist. The way the netlink works is you are actually calling another person using the phone line. Servers didn't exist on consoles just yet.newt42 wrote:Are there still online hosts for those games, or were servers a thing of the future at that point?
This guys videos about it are quite informative: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVilZGAmr30
It's a 4 part series of videos (even though it says only 3).

Well damn... Sounds like it could be a pain in the ass, but at least online gaming will stay forever on that console.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:Actually the Saturn NetLink games are direct dial games, meaning you directly call the other Saturn console across town/the state/the country/the globe and voila you're connected.newt42 wrote:Are there still online hosts for those games, or were servers a thing of the future at that point?crux wrote:I only just realized that NetLink games will be active for as long as analogue phone lines exist. Actually it's quite easy.newt42 wrote:Well damn... Sounds like it could be a pain in the ass, but at least online gaming will stay forever on that console.
Here are the four things you need to play online with a Saturn.
1) NetLink Modem
2) Standard Telephone cable
3) A NetLink compatible game
4) Your buddy's phone number
That's it plain and simple.

The Saturn, along with the PC Engine (Turbografx-16), is my favourite system. You've got some GREAT gaming experiences coming your way. VF2 is just barely scratching the surface.
