Most overlooked PC game of the year: ThreadSpace Hyperbol

Post by Mozgus »

It really saddens me when this happens. Some creative guys came together and made a very fresh, unique online game, and it is completely ignored. This game is a really solid product. The only thing wrong with it is it barely has anyone playing online, and without a community of players, it's worthless.

http://www.hyperbol.com/

I'll sum it up really quick. It's an online action game where you build a ship, make an avatar, and immediately compete online. The battlefields are flat electronic fields in space. Battle is realtime. Kills grant you bounty money. Money can be spent on ship parts and such. You also gain EXP. Servers can be dedicated or run by players, but the wins and loses and such are tracked by a master server which takes note of your progress, as well of the conditions met during the matches which actually affect a large universal map of sections which each of the 3 factions own, so it kind of has an MMO feel to it as well.

The best part of the game is the weapon system. It reminds me of Worms, in that many of the weapons or utilities are quite versatile, and can be used in countless ways based on your actual handling of them. A common example would be an enemy who is protected by a structure or fence. You can could throw out a repulsor orb to use as a ricochet for your projectile weapons to reach the enemy. Or you could try a homing missile by selecting it's angle, launching it, and with careful timing, engaging it's thrusters to make the turn.

I just really really wish people would try the demo on steam, and spread the word. If IGN or Gamespot would review this game, I think it would truly take off. I really can't find anything wrong with it. For $20 and no monthly fees, it's a steal. And it seems well supported by the devs, as patches continue to flow out despite the practically non-existant community.

I'm, really sorry, I'd love to play but just don't have time to commit to an(other) MMO game (I play MTGO, and that hasn't even been getting much of my time).
I'm guessing rookies get grilled pretty hard in the battles, particularly as the veterans have more experience in their chars and more money (and thus better ships). Seems like casually playing it will be for losing all the time (I mean, even in "fair" games like Starcraft where only player skill counts - as opposed to e.g. WoW where the collected items and such are important - if you're not at least semi-hardcore about them you get destroyed in online play).
I'm willing to hear about any measures the company has implemented to avoid that sort of stuff, though.

I will be fair about it and take a look at it when I have more time (maybe next week) if there is a demo - but I doubt I will be supporting it as I loathe monthly fees (I feel that I'm getting a bad deal unless I have enough time to really play the monthly fee game a lot - which as you can guess tends not to happen).

Dude, no monthly fees. It's a $20 budget game, and the servers are run by players or dedicated machines, just like Valve games. And it's not really an MMO. It just tracks your stats when you play on servers that check that option. And also, (if we had more than 20 god damn players online at any moment), there are servers made for various levels of experience. In fact you arent allowed into upper level rooms often, and I assume upper level players arent allowed into very low level rooms, and such. Of course this all means dick until the community expands....if it does.

This game just has so much potential. It looks to be a nice relaxing online games to get into an hour here or there. If you're in a good room with nice people who creative avatars and use voice chat and all that, it's a hell of a positive experience. It's a great counter-balance to all these damn twitch based, stressful online combat games I have.

Must admit, I'm both poor and disinterested. It does look like a cool game, but just not my thing right now. Since it does look cool I wish the authors luck, but I have bigger fish to fry.

I figured the "and disinterested" would also be important here. Glad you were reading the whole post.

That just shows you how carefully I was reading the post :P You've convinced me to try it, perhaps this weekend (besides, I should have more time after today :D)

Now don't be an ass. I just debunked 50% of your bitching. Give me some credit.
