Revolution and ROM downloading

Do you guys think that the Revolution will kill all the ROM sites when it comes out? I think it probably will. I am surprised that Nintendo hasn't come down hard on some of those sites already. Now that Nintendo has realized that they can make some money from the "retro gamers"; I think ROM sites will go the way of the Dodo.

i dont really think rom sites will ever dissapear there are way too many out there to take down...nintendo has a losing battle with that...because there are some people that will not pick up this console and still play there classics either thru there pc's or there consoles that they have...cuz you can play these classics on the ps2,xbox just need a modchip for those things.....plus with imesh,limewire and all those other downloading type software there is no way any company will be able to take that stuff down no matter how hard they try......

but you have to admit it will be much more convenient for the people who don't want to mess with all that in order to play the old games on their TV.

Even I would prefer a system like that if the price was reasonable.

I would probably still use a PC emulator to try games out to see if I like them.
Then if I get in the habit of playing it, I would buy it on the Revolution

In order for something to be a prosecutable copywrite infringement, you have to be able to obtain the item though retail. You can’t obtain any Saturn games from their respective developers or any of the old NES, SNES, N64 ect.. games from their respective developers so there is no way to prosecute a ROM site. Why would they want to any how? It’s not like they are costing them money, ROMs by nature are linked to dead game systems that their respective companies don’t care about anymore.

The Nintendo Rev won't kill anything but Nintendo's pocket book, they will probbaly be looseing allot of money on it. I don't care to much about them looseing money on it though, I think it will be a great system and have lots of great games. I really am excited about their new controler, I hate this "speed up the graphics and make a new system" approach that has been taken for the last 10 years or so.

Not sure how this got brought up -- but a copyright is a copyright.
So technically, they can do what they are doing.

But I think there needs to be a bit of a balance.

If I was in their shoes, this is what I would do:
Shut down the people making the cheapo console things at the mall that have like 20 NES games built-in. These companies are obviously making good money off of Nintendo's property.
I would probably try to keep ROM site from becoming too mainstream and such. I think it's healthy to have a little "underground" action, but nothing huge.

Let people trade a few ROMs here and there for older systems. I keeps them alive. A lot of Nintendo's old games would be forgotton if there were not emulators.

I don't force it on others, but my personal conviction is the following:
Pay for retail copies of current-gen games (used or new)
Share ROMs and ISOs of older-gen stuff
Buy the older games that I like for my newer consoles (both to support the publishers of retro stuff and be able to play the games on my modern consoles)
Occassionally by original retro carts/CDs of the games I really enjoy -- just for collecting sake.

that is actually what i do,i download like say nes roms if i like the game i go on ebay and buy it...on a another thread i mentioned all the nes games i bought,that was because of playing them on a emulator and i just had to get it in cart form to own it...you see nintendo would win big with this if they didnt complain about emulation and stuff....

I think its a good idea they have going, for me it would depend on the type of pay to play model they will use. I'm not really enthused about a subscription model (i.e. $15 a month to play from a selection of titles), since I would rather have a 'pay to own a copy of' type model (i.e. pay $1-2 for a copy of super mario bros which I can play whenever and for as long as I want). Or maybe some sort of hybrid

I think it would be very attractive if they added community and online type features to these retro titles especially if other companies like Sega and Capcom sign on. After seeing a few references XBox Live Arcade, I was thinking it would be awesome if we could see some more recent retro arcade titles, like being able to play the original Sega Rally or Daytona games online, or maybe online tournaments of the Street Fighter Zero/Alpha series etc.

I don't buy new carts because I really don't like haveing to shuffel arround a box to find a game and then hope it didn't get to hot or cold and isn't to dirty. Also, old systems don't have good outputs, componet out really makes a BIG difference.
