Hey guys, I just registered for the forums after lurking for a bit (and after ordering from racketboy in the past)! I splurged on a Neo Geo CDZ system for my brother for Christmas, currently waiting for it in the mail. Anyway, this seemed like the board to maybe get a few answers to some quick questions, since you fellas are discussing NGCD stuff already a few threads below... anyway -
Does the CDZ play burnt games like the regular NGCD systems do?
Since they were only released in Japan (right?), does that mean the games will play in Japanese (or is there a way to turn it into a "US" system)?
I can't wait to get him started collecting Neo Geo CD games like we've collected tons of other stuff over the past 25 years. Thanks for the help!!
A few Neo Geo CDZ questions
Re: A few Neo Geo CDZ questions
Yup, but as with using burnt discs on any game system, try not to make it a habit. Burnt games tend to be hard on the laser and burn it out quicker. Best to build up a collection of real games. ESPECIALLY with the CDZ, as it's not quite a sturdy as the other two models.bobble wrote:Does the CDZ play burnt games like the regular NGCD systems do?
They will play in Japanese (although some games have an English option). There is a very easy mod you can do to change the region on it. Do a search here, as it's been discussed recently.Since they were only released in Japan (right?), does that mean the games will play in Japanese (or is there a way to turn it into a "US" system)?
Awesome! I personally recommend Wind Jammers (aka. Flying Power Disc). It's probably my favourite Neo Geo game, along with the Metal Slug series and Twinkle Star Sprites. Unlike those other games, it's actually affordable!I can't wait to get him started collecting Neo Geo CD games like we've collected tons of other stuff over the past 25 years. Thanks for the help!!

Re: A few Neo Geo CDZ questions
Thank you so much for the help! I got the system today and have been playing around with it a bit before I give it to him next week - I had heard some bad things but I love the controller! I'm sure he'll eventually get some sticks but the directional "pad"/stick thing reminds me a lot of the NGPC. Loading on fighting games seems ridiculous but otherwise it seems no worse than a PS1 or Saturn. He has kind of a "retro game room" at his place with a WIP MAME cabinet we've been working on for the past few months and a nice 32 inch HD CRT TV, these big sprites should look great on there!
Re: A few Neo Geo CDZ questions
CDZ will hold up well. Its reliability is in the middle of the 3 systems, but a very nice find if you are getting into neocd.
Start with puzzle games and platformers on the CD system. The later fighting games(97-99) have brutal loading times. If you are gonna play the fighters, lower the handicap to 0 so the matches last longer. It's more fun that way.

There are 3 different models of the Neo Geo CD? Can someone please explain the differences? I actually have a few of the games but I haven't bought a console yet.

No. Better read it yourself.Inazuma wrote:There are 3 different models of the Neo Geo CD? Can someone please explain the differences? I actually have a few of the games but I haven't bought a console yet.

Think front loaders are more expensive and prone to breaking, kinda like sega cd.

Like someone else said...stay away from the later year fights...dear god the loading times...go on you tube and put in
neogeo cd vs aes or something like that
Samuari spirits will come up *not even that new* and it shows 2 screens...cd vs aes..the aes plays 2 FULL rounds...before the cd even says FIGHT. THAT is the kinda brutal times its known for.

Samurai Spirits/Shodown is one of the faster loading fighters!!!lost_within wrote:Like someone else said...stay away from the later year fights...dear god the loading times...go on you tube and put in

IMO, the front loader looks the best, the CDZ is the fastest, but most unreliable, and the regular top loader is the most reliable and cheapest. I like the front loader because it looks awesome and it was the first one I owned.

Re: A few Neo Geo CDZ questions
I'm gonna go with the top loader model but I have one more question. How do I save my progress? I know there is a memory card that works for the AES and MVS but what about the CD games?

It's on board, although to be honest I've never bothered with it.Inazuma wrote:I'm gonna go with the top loader model but I have one more question. How do I save my progress? I know there is a memory card that works for the AES and MVS but what about the CD games?
Do you have anywhere to get a top loader? I might have one more left (meaning that I do have one in box, but I need to get off my rear end and replace a part on it).
