Has cover art ever been a factor when buying a game?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Every time I see that cover, I laugh. I have seen it countless times everywhere, both the first and second ones. I had no idea until I found racketboy.com what the game actually was. Now of course when I try to hunt a copy down, I can't find it...

Yes...to this day, if I find doom for a good price for ANY console...I buy it, all because of the cover art...

WHen I was younger I actually had to reseach before buying quake...my favorite all time FPS. BUT due to the horrible cover just being a big ass stone fork/Q....I couldnt believe all the hype...then the demo came out and I made love to the Q on that box...every night...for 8 hours.
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.

I can't believe Europe is getting not only getting the cool cover, but also a Europe only special edition of Heavy Rain. Looks kinda cool, I may be importing this one. http://kotaku.com/5449585/heavy-rains-s ... -tank-tops

Like a lot of other guys here I can remember going to rent NES games without doing any research before hand. Thankfully we had a gamer working our local store at the time and he was always willing to make recommendations or let us use the NES he had behind the counter to try-out stuff before we rented in.

By the time I got a Genesis (1991) and SNES (1992) I was reading Gamepro magazine every month. I don't know if their mag/website is any good now, but back then it was great. Pretty much anything you needed was in the mag; Reviews, Letters from readers with replies from reviewers and the editor, moves lists for just about every fighting game, strategy guides for RPGs, they had entire sections devoted to RPG and sport games. If a game came out on any console (even ones like the CDI, Neo-Geo and 3D0) they would review it. When the web was still a new thing for the mainstream they even listed ftp servers and webpages where you could find guides (this was way before gamefaqs).

BTW old copies of Gamepro make up the bulk of my collection. I still have every issue I bought going back to 1991. I was a subscriber by the year 93 or so because I got tired of paying $5+ for it every month.

So I guess cover art was never a big deal for me but I do have fond memories about the cover art for some games. The very first game I ever bought with my own money was Super Mario Brothers 3 for the NES. I remember going in to the shop and seeing that awesome looking yellow cover on the top self and wanting it soooo bad. My father refused to buy it for me (because I already had the first Mario ) so I earned the money to get it by mowing yards.

I also remember renting Night Trap for the SCD when I first got it due to the cover art:

That's not the exact cover. I don't know if the rental store added this warning but at the time it was the only game in the store that had a warning on it that stated: Not for people 18 or younger. For a kid that hasn't even hit 10 that was like a neon sign screaming "Rent Me!".

I know it shouldn't be a determining factor, but it often is.
