My advice is: learn the basics. Timing is everything. All the special moves and cool combos won't help you if you don't get the basics down right. Blocking, countering, punishing the other player when they whiff (miss an attack), zoning (where you position yourself and how you control the screen). These all matter far more than flashy moves.
Watch Dave Sirlin's three Super Turbo training videos:

Beginner part 2:

Advanced:
Note where he starts: controlling space and zoning. These come long before learning how to cancel moves and negative-edge command throws. And there's good reason for that.
Not to go on and on with Sirlin fanboy lust, but read his "Playing to Win" book (available free online, or in paperback):

With that said, high level competition isn't for everyone. Some people just love a good buttom spam for laughs. I personally love a good comp, even if my lack of practice in the last 5 years means I generally come out on the bottom of the ladder. It's still fun to see the best of the best do their thing at a high level.

Tournaments are about winning at any cost. There's no "cheap" and there's no "boring". There's the guy who takes the prize money, and there's 200 others who go home with nothing.the7k wrote:The whole "hopping back and forth" shit is exactly why I don't like tournaments - either participating in them or watching them.
In Soviet Russia, there is no "hopping back". There is only forward. I've always played a high-speed, high-offense game, and for one reason - it's fun. My win-loss ratio may be only about half-n-half, but I don't care. Nothing bores me more than waiting for an opening - I prefer to make my own.

Oh, and the "flowcharts" are pretty funny, even if they quite sadly cover 90% of players.
Here's two more:

Here's some more:

Anyone want to make flow charts for other fighting games? MvC, perhaps?

Heh, I remember in High School, I knew a few who always played the game as Cable, and would just push HP->HP->HP->QCF+HP over and over again.GSZX1337 wrote: Anyone want to make flow charts for other fighting games? MvC, perhaps?

Ugh, I hate those cheap bastards. That's why I used to ban Cable when people played MvC2 at my house.the7k wrote:Heh, I remember in High School, I knew a few who always played the game as Cable, and would just push HP->HP->HP->QCF+HP over and over again.GSZX1337 wrote: Anyone want to make flow charts for other fighting games? And then of course, if we're talking the first MvC, there were the guys who would just pick Mega Man and jump up and down, hitting HP to spam fireballs.

Stop banning characters, and start learning counter attacks.GSZX1337 wrote:Ugh, I hate those cheap bastards. That's why I used to ban Cable when people played MvC2 at my house.
People who rely on one or two bread and butter combos are trivial to beat. The best way to put them in their place is to learn an effective counter and use it. If they've only got one attack and you beat it over and over, it'll either force them to lift their game, or throw a tantrum and quit. Either way, it's win-win.

People still do it all the time...the7k wrote:Heh, I remember in High School, I knew a few who always played the game as Cable, and would just push HP->HP->HP->QCF+HP over and over again.GSZX1337 wrote: Anyone want to make flow charts for other fighting games? MvC, perhaps?
I can't remember the last time I played a ranked match on xbox live without running in to someone using cable like that. I've gotten pretty good at countering it now...if you can get over there in the corner with them it really messes with them as they don't expect it.
A really "cheap" way to counter it: Bring out Iceman and block, you take no chip damage in addition to begin a beamer. Assuming the guy playing cable doesn't tag it turns in to you blocking and punishing him with beams and supers whenever you get a chance. If he attempts to jump in just use QCB + HK and continue to punish him the same way he was attempting to punish you.
I love using Iceman against a cable users....nothing more funny than them crying cheap because you take no damage while blocking. >)
