I perfer the wheel. I play to have FUN. Sometimes I intentionally lose to let other people I play against have FUN too.

Another vote for the wheel - to the point where I wouldn't play without one. In fact, everyone I know and play with (casual or core gamer) prefers the wheel. It has a higher learning curve to master than an analog stick and requires more skill in my opinion, but also allows casual gamers who aren't familiar with "traditional" controls to play and enjoy the game. That said, I'm glad there are options to accomdate other people. The more the merrier, right?

I'm not saying anything more about the topic, because my opinions are quite strong and probably already known... but wanted to step up and mention that any assertions about the wheel "sucking" are entirely a matter of opinion.

I wish they hadn't bothered. Hands down the worst thing about Mario Galaxy is the waggle for attack. So many times I have died because the waggle didn't register correctly. I end up waggle the remote like crazy when I want to do attacks. What a pain in the ass.
Damn straight, why couldn't Mario punch enemies and have the waggle-spin be a special attack? I also hated having to do the Sting-Ray races with the Wii-Mote.

The verdict is in: while Nintendo dominated the video game market in 2009, it missed out on the top spot.

Instead, it was the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2 that sold the most, according to retail tracking firm NPD Group. Figures from the game's publisher indicate the blockbuster war shooter sold nearly 6 million copies in 2009, a feat that's all the more remarkable considering the game didn't release until well into November. Modern Warfare 2 was also the eighth best-selling game of the year, although on the PlayStation 3 rather than the Xbox.

Beyond that, the year belonged to Nintendo. Seven of the year's best sellers were Nintendo games -- six on the Wii, and one (Pokemon Platinum) on the DS. Aside from Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3: ODST was the only other non-Nintendo entry, charting at 9th place.

It's not much of a console war after all.

According to figures released by the NPD Group, the Nintendo Wii trounced the competition in December, moving over 3.8 million units in the U.S. to set a new single-month record. That brought the Wii's yearly total to 9.6 million units: down a bit from 2008, but good enough to double both Microsoft's Xbox 360 (4.7 million) and Sony's Playstation 3 (4.3 million).
The year's biggest winner, however, was Nintendo's unstoppable DS handheld. Courtesy a huge December (3.3. million, second only to the Wii), the system managed to top 11.2 million in 2009, setting an industry record for the most systems sold in the U.S. in one calendar year. The previous record holder? The Nintendo Wii, which sold about 10.2 million in 2008.

In defense of the wii

Post by Flake »

Looking at another thread on this board made me realize something: The prime past time of 360 or PS3 fans isn't playing games. It's bashing on the wii.

Okay, we get it Xbox / PS3 aficionados. Now instead of citing crushing sales figures, hardware reliability or platform profitability, I'd like to take a look at a few less vaunted reasons why the Wii is not and will not be a failure.

Weak Online- For the solo game player (and yes there are plenty of us out there) there is no finer platform than the wii. More games (not just Mario Galaxy) come out for the wii that promise an outstanding solo experience. 360 and PS3 do online well. I'll concede that. But sometimes you'd rather not come home from work, pop open a beer, load a game, and then get called homophobic names for the next two hours. Games like Muramasa, Punchout, Warioland Shake it, Tales of Symphonia, The Legend of Zelda, Super Paper Mario, etc offer single player experiences virtually unmatched on the consoles of larger horse-power.

For the Artists - The Wii's 'weak' graphics may be its greatest strength. My gaming ways date back to 1986. I was there when the dragon appeared in Wily's Castle in Megaman 2. My jaw dropped at how colorful and huge it was. Amazing! I'm still amazed by todays incredible graphics but my jaw doesn't drop anymore. 3D affects are nice but in striving to achieve a believable representation of reality, games have lost that all too important quality of UNREALITY. I've played Modern Warfare 2 and it's a marvel. It's also boring to look at. I'll take Metroid Prime 3 any day of the week. It's the artwork that stuns me. I play that game and I STILL pause every now and then to take in the alien landscape or to enjoy the subtle horror of my surroundings. Or Madworld, another game that uses artwork to draw the player in instead of hyper realistic graphics. And let's not forget Muramasa. I can see the real world right outside my door. I rather prefer seeing the mushroom kingdom.

An escapists dream - The real world sucks. It's boring and mean. This is why we play games. My final point is one I rarely see brought up. When you play most PS3 or 360 games, you're usually doing extreme versions of things you can do in real life. Be a Soldier! Race a car! Throw the footsball! Awesome times. These are the things a LOT of people want to do and PS3 and 360 do these things well. But what about the rest of us? Those of us that grew up saving the Princess and wish to continue doing so? Or those of us that don't mind looking silly as long as we're having fun? Or like baseball but like it even more when we're batting against a massive fire breathing lizard? Or want to command armies of silly monsters? People complain that the wii makes 'kiddy' games. I dare say that where you see something that is 'kiddy' I often see a chance to experience the impossible, the silly, and the irreverent. And sometimes that's exactly what we need.

Besides, all the 'kids' are busy playing Halo 3. They are quite foul mouthed, no?

The 360 and PS3 are great. They don't offer me what I want in a game console, but that's nothing against them. We are all different as gamers. I just wish that more gamers would realize that and appreciate the diversity of gaming we have today. It hasn't always been this way, folks.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

The thing that irritates me most about the Wii is the fact that games aren't taking advantage of what it CAN do. Motion controls are mostly tacked on (I hate these games) and a lot look like a PS1 or N64 game.

I think the motion control stuff is overused and I would like the option to be able to control it like a GC game if needed. For some games it works really well, but others...well.

Now I'm not a graphics whore by any means. I would rather the game run at a fluid 30-60fps and look a little worse than look great and have constant glitches and slowdown. Now some Wii games do take advantage of the hardware (which is pretty good, actually), but A LOT don't. It's frustrating to see something that was quickly ported over from DS without effort, or just plain shovel ware for that matter.

I guess they will keep making the crappy games as long as people keep buying them.

I must say, I am a big fan of "kiddy" games, was a huge Wii fanboy when it first came out, and havent turned the little white box on in a very, very long time. I mostly play games by myself, and I would disagree with your assertion that Wii offers the finest single player games. I too love artwork in games, usually more than photorealism. I enjoyed playing the Prince of Persia on PS3 and Borderlands on my friends 360. Both are great to look at, and neither could ever be done with the proper respect they deserve on Wii. Wii does have some great games, but these days they are released few and far between and the crap games are overflowing shelves everywhere.

To Flake:

Weak Online - Having a small group of strong single-player games doesn't justify having such a crippled online experience. Guess what? There's plenty of single-player games on the PS3/360. Games like Valkyria Chronicles, Tales of Vesperia, Uncharted 2, Bioshock, Demon's Souls, Batman: Arkham Asylum and many others. The best part? It wasn't at the expense of great online games. We get the best of both worlds.

For The Artists - Just because the PS3/360 is capable of photo-realism doesn't mean that all the developers are gunning for that. Take a look at Flower, the PixelJunk series, Geometry Wars, Braid, Castle Crashers and many other titles on PSN/XBLA. Then take a look at BlazBlue, Valkyria Chronicles (again), Borderlands, Bayonetta and many other games that toss photorealism aside to do something different.

An escapists dream - Go To For The Artists. How many people do you know that will ever be able to do any of the stuff that you can do in those above games?

I'll say this: If Nintendo had kept it's momentum from Nov06-Nov07, I'd still be a hardcore Wii fanboy, laughing at people with 360s and PS3s. But they didn't keep that momentum, really. Nintendo just held on the Wii's bicycle until it was sure it could ride without it's help, let go, and then went back in the house to drink a beer and swim in the piles of money it accumulated, never once even looking out the window to make sure the Wii didn't get attacked by traveling gangs of shovelware and developer disinterest.

As much as I loved Nintendo's little white box of tricks during it's launch year and the following year. So many hours played on that machine. It's been sat gethering dust for the best part of a year. Why? No games worth playing. New Super Mario Bros, Muramasa and Wii Sports Resort? What do you mean? "that's it". A year and those are the only releases worth shouting about? Give me a fucking break... Cmon Nintendo, you're better than this.
