Cave Story... yeah, I'm late to the party

Post by jfe2 »

I've had the translated version of Cave Story sitting on my hard drive for a while now, but have never actually gotten around to trying it out before today. I finished VVVVVV and wanted some more PC platforming action since my fingers were getting accustomed to the keyboard controls, and it was either this or Spelunky. Spelunky can wait in line, because Cave Story is freaking great!

I didn't really know what to expect other than a platformer, but this absolutely blew me away! It's a total understatement to say that this game is good for a free game, because it's better than most games that retail for $60. The throwback graphics, the cute little sprites, the intriguing story, and the addicting as hell Metroidvania gameplay all unite to make one of the most nostalgic-feeling experiences a newer game could ever give.

I know I'm late to the party here, since this has been out for awhile, but has anyone else here played this? What are your thoughts? No story spoilers for me please! I'm not too far into the game, just looking for some puppies at the moment.

I downloaded it but still did not play it
I am trying to get a 360 joystick or ps3 to play it with.

is it that good?
Why the developers decided to release it for free
with all its positive reviews, they could have charged at least $5

There's nothing to say really if it's your first play through except that there's another ending. On your second play you should try not trading your main weapon in for the machine gun so you can get the Snake or Spur

Pixel explained that he didn't want any money for it because he didn't make it for profit, wanted everyone to be able to enjoy it, and dislikes the way shareware works.

Cave Story is a GREAT game. I too found it a couple of years back. Once I started, I had to finish it. Ofcourse, I used a gamepad hooked up to my computer, seems alittle easier. Also, Cave Story is going to be released on the Wii, so hopefully Pixel makes some money!

I decided to use Xpadder with it today and it plays really good with my PlaySEGA joypad. Jumps are a bit easier to make now. :D

Welcome to the party! Cave Story is brilliant. If this game had come out in the 80s or early 90s, we would all be talking about this as one of the historically greatest games of all time. Of course, it came out much later, but playing it feels like you just discovered the best NES game that nobody ever heard of.

If someone reading this thread has not played this game, you have to try it. Here's the link for the free download: http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/

This!!!

I've played a few games recently that would be considered absolute classics had they been made 20 or 25 years ago, but today they don't get nearly as much recognition as they deserve. Cave Story, VVVVVV, and Knight 'n' Grail are ALL masterpieces that you owe it to yourselves to play!

So I beat it tonight, and I can honestly say that it is one of my top ten favorite games of all time. It's such a great game, and I enjoyed it so much that I honestly may buy a Wii just to download it when it comes to Wii-Ware. :D

I got two different endings off of one save file tonight, and apparently there are others depending on choices that are made during the game. I'll definitely play through it again in the future, but tomorrow I'm devoting all my time to Dragon Age, and maybe I'll start Aquaria if I get the urge.
