My strategy for noobs is this:

1) Pick Sagat.
2) You Win!

In all seriousness, just pick a character you like and learn the ins and outs of them. Watch videos of people using them effectively, read strategies people have come up with, etc. Knowledge is half the battle.

I grew up playing super turbo then moved to the Alpha games on Saturn, then SFIII, all played on the highest speed setting. So migrating to SFIV was like, WTF?! Why aren't any of my specials/ultra working? It turns out, the game just ignores you if you pull your moves off too fast. Which is the most retarded thing about SFIV. Makes the game so much more difficult than it should be. Having to think about pulling my moves of sloooowly just ruins the game for me. I'm used to performing specials a few ticks. This game just ignores you if you don't take longer than a second to input.

My friend who hadn't played SFIII or any of the alphas, but played a little SF2 back in the day, owned me on it at first because he plays the game really slowly. I'm literally twitching my moves out because they're so ingrained, it's just muscle memory. I don't think about what I'm doing, I just react. SFIV just fucks all that up.

Also, M.Bison. Just hold back for a second, toward+HP. Rinse and repeat. If that fails, use Zangief, learn how to do atomic buster. Profit.

Also Zangief can throw anything

Oh yeah, more cheap tricks with Zangief. Double Lariat can avoid pretty much anything, it also stops him jumping for a period of time, so if you aren't too hot on your full circle motions, do a double lariat then key in your atomic buster (full clockwise circle starting from towards and finishing on towards+HP) Chances are the opponent is still going through the animation of his previous move or block when you do your atomic buster.

Doing that over and over again is a sure fire way of winning most bouts of SFIV on xbox live. It's also a sure fire way to cripple your player rating, I don't care as long as I'm winning though. Zangief is almost always overpowered on most SF games, even more so on SFIV and Super turbo.

I grew up SFII, but never played 3... so you should all go to the Together Retro thread and vote for SF3 Alpha to be our 2D Fighter this year.

Yeah, Zangief's Lariat Spam is Super Effective. It's especially great that you can just bind 3xPunch and 3xKick to one button. Also, even though it isn't a Focus Breaker, it hits twice if they use a Focus Attack - making them take double damage. It's beautiful.

That video made me hate Zangief even more than I already did.

Maybe watching a match between two experts will help? Check this out, probably the most famous street fighter match in history:

With that out of the way (I really love that video ;)) here are some tips:

- Playing the CPU is nothing like playing against a real human. You can practice with the CPU all day and get really good only to get stomped if you were to play in a real arcade.

- Playing over the internet on live or PSN is nothing like playing with someone in the same room. No matter how good your connection to the host is there will always be lag on your end (or the other player's end if your hosting). It really makes it unfair imo because quick reaction time is everything in a 2D fighter.

- As others have said: Practice makes perfect. Your going to have to pull specials off over and over again before they become second nature. Your not going to do long combos in this game without spending a lot of time learning which moves can be chained in to other moves.

- Your going to have to learn mind games if you expect to ever be a decent player. You have to learn how to predict what your opponent is thinking without falling in to traps they might have set-up for you.

- This is true of all 2D fighters: If your jumping towards the other guy you should be on the attack, if your jumping away you should be on the defense or setting up a trap, if you need to jump just to avoid an attack just straight up and counter attack. This isn't going to win you matches on it's own but A LOT of people don't seem to learn it no matter how many times they get their asses kicked.

- Learn all the basic attacks and how to use them effectively before you even think about throwing out a super.

- A lot of newer 2D fighting games include a practice mode and built in moves list. Use them.

- A good controller is a god-send. If you don't have the cash for a "real" arcade set-up at least get yourself a good 6-button controller with a good d-pad.

- There is always someone out there better than you, so don't get discouraged. I've been playing 2D fighters since they were a new genre and I still regularly get my ass handed to me on live when playing MvC2.

- Last but not least: There are no cheap moves. If you lose because the other guy nailed you with the same move over and over again it is your fault. See: http://www.sirlin.net/articles/playing- ... art-1.html

I'm not saying your that type of player, I'm just trying to encourage you not to become one. :)

That video doesn't help me improve. It just makes me feel incredibly inept.

It is one hell of a come-back though. I've seen that video before, but the final turnaround still makes me smile. That victory must have felt great.

The whole "hopping back and forth" shit is exactly why I don't like tournaments - either participating in them or watching them.

In Soviet Russia, there is no "hopping back". There is only forward. I've always played a high-speed, high-offense game, and for one reason - it's fun. My win-loss ratio may be only about half-n-half, but I don't care. Nothing bores me more than waiting for an opening - I prefer to make my own.

Speaking of Soviet Russia, Niode said something about if you were having trouble with full circle motions - the best way to do this is to go Forward, Down, Back, Up + Punch. If you end by pressing Up + Punch simultaneously, you won't jump. This is how I've always done it, and it's always helped me deliver BIG SOVIET DAMAGE against those little, little men. (If you are going to play grapple characters online, make sure you invest in a mic and memorize these quotes.)
