Mgs4?

Post by DNT 2.5 »

Well, I picked up MGS4 today for about $20, But I can't say anything about it really, it feels more like an interactive movie than a game. I am not really enjoying it, I was playing for three straight hours, the most I could do was crawl around through the levels, and anywhere too, I tried using my gun a couple times, but every time I kill something, I automatically get killed by the enemies. so does this change throughout the game, or is it pretty much just Crawl behind this the whole game? I mean, it is alright, But I have yet to see what everyone was orgasming over when it was released.

I felt the same way about it, so much so that I couldn't get through it. I played a few hours before I got so bored I had to stop. I did however watch my brother play it so I did get to see some really cool scenes, which is plentiful in this game. For me the gameplay was almost non-existant, it was basically crawl behind this object and wait a few minutes for this enemy to leave, then he leaves and you crawl another 5 feet. Not only that but sometimes I would be spotted and it would take nearly 5 minutes just for the alert and all those other statuses to go away, then as soon as it did, the enemy I just tranquilized before wakes up and causes another Alert status. I swear, between all the cutscenes and time spending waiting for the Alert to go away I was playing about 20% of the time and sitting there the other 80%.

Not to say the game is bad, I love the metalgear series, this one just wasn't for me.

I started playing the game recently, and to be honest, I had a different experience than you so far.

The first couple areas you kind of sneak around without weapons, but it kind of guides you into the game and controls easily and then you get put in the action. Personally, I didn't really get my ass kicked too badly, but there was just enough challenge there to keep me coming back. Yes the cutscenes are a bit long, but its metal gear. Also, they add a lot to the game imho.

So far I'm lovin the game.

It sounds like this is your first Metal Gear experience. As such, it's obvious why you don't enjoy it - Playing MGS4 first would be like watching Return of the Jedi before even hearing about A New Hope or The Empire Strikes Back.

If you're worried that the game won't let you treat it like Generic Action Game # 459, give it time. The game gives you a lot more freedom to play the game The Wrong Way later on. But if you bought MGS4 expecting Gears Of War, that isn't exactly MGS4's fault.

What the7k said. Sneaking around undetected is what the game is about...

Maybe you should buy Metal Gear Solid 1 from the PSN, that will ease you into the games entire ethic. You're not supposed to kill anyone in the game (well you're pretty much forced to in the first one since the series didn't have tranqs or CQC), and it's perfectly possible (MGS2 onwards) to go through the entire game without killing a single person, in fact you're encouraged to play the game this way, killing people negatively affects your end of game rating.

I think a lot of people go into MGS4 expecting it to be the PS3s answer to Halo or like the7k said, Gears of War. It couldn't be further away from those games. The high concept and the exquisite acting in the cutscenes, plus the sheer beauty of the game makes sure this way more than it's peers. It is one of the best, if not the best game of this generation. If the concept of not shooting somebody in the face for a change doesn't appeal to you, then go back to Gears of War or GTA or something like that.

Edit: This should go in the Sony & Microsoft forum.

I agree fully with 7k and Niode. Maybe you should start from the first one and move forward from there. In other words, learn to walk before you run. You are going to be totally lost if you hadn't played the other games. Anyways, most of MGS4 gives you a choice to go full guns blazing or use stealth. Each act tries to do something different in terms of gameflow. I guess Metal Gear series is not for everyone though.

Some people expect one thing from the game and miss the entire point of the game, which is like Niode said not to kill anyone. My brother loved MGS2?! But never really liked the 3 or 4. I love the Metal Gear series and have every single game in the series. Solid Snake and Big Boss are the definition of badass. If anyones seen the new A-Team trailer, Liam Nelson does a mean Big Boss impression in one part of the trailer its great.

No, I bought it expecting a tactical action game, Like it was advertised. and yes this is my first MGS game, I always thought like most action games regardless of place in the series, it would ease you into the game first then throw series action at you, but this one seems to be dependent on the earlier games in the series.

I played all the way through MGS4 when it first came out. I had played maybe an hour of MGS2 years before but it was pretty much my first MGS game. Saying that, I loved that game. I didn't really know what to expect other than: lots of cut scenes, really difficult, and you have to sneak the entire time. But after an hour or so in, I played it like some hybrid between Gears of War and Splinter Cell. I killed when I wanted to kill and held back and sneaked by when I wanted to. I played though on Solid Normal (I think thats what its called) and had a really good time.

So to the original poster, if you're not really into it, thats cool. But I'd recommend just playing it how you want to. I think Kojima designed it that way (bc in my opinion, it is an easy game).

I think you need to play the other Metal Gear Solids, or at least the first one if you don't have access to a PS2.

It's so much more than 'sneak behind this' I think that the point of the game is just lost on you because you haven't played the previous ones. It's definitely one of those games that requires some sort of connection to the story if you are going to enjoy it, you have to give a shit about the characters and what happens otherwise you're just wasting your time.

i would say test out the first one...but if not you could always try MGS3 it's a prequel to all of the games in the story and it's got it's fair share of action. it still is considered a stealth game but that's MGS for you
