Launch era PS2 playing metal gear solid one

Post by Arbitern1 »

Ok i bought the metal gear solid essential collection, and went to fire up my PS2 and put MGS1 in. It gets to the playstation logo and freezes up with the words under the logo scrambled....I can play the game and hear the sounds but i cannot get any other visual out of the system but the logo...Ive never had any trouble with my ps2 before and maintain it very well.....It plays just fine in my PS1 but it just doesnt work in the PS2.. any ideas?

What video cables are you using? I have my PS2 hooked up to an HD TV via component cables and it plays PS2 games perfectly... HOWEVER whenever I try to play PS1 games I see the PS logo screen with sound, then the screen goes black (screen says invalid format) and I just get the in-game sounds. In order to play PS1 games I have to hook it up via A/V (Red, Yellow, White) cables; then it works like a dream. I'm thinking this is most likely the issue.

BTW, I have a PS2 slim if that matters.

Actually some of the earlier slims (and slims in general) have issues with PS1 stuff.

Yea, I read about some of them having issues with PS1 games. I have also read quite a few forum posts about people who try to play PS1 games on the PS2 with composite on an HDTV and get the same issue I do though. Something about PS1 games only being 240p and many HDTVs don't work correctly with that resolution.

I've never had a issue with my PS1 stuff on my Slim. Agreed, some of the games look awful on a HDTV, but I never play my PS1 games on a HDTV unless I want sore eyes and a headache. As for the launch PS2 having issues playing PS1 games, does it have issues playing other PS1 games or just MGS? If its all your PS1 games there isn't much you can do aside from cleaning the lens with some compressed air. If its just that game, it could be because its a later reprint of a PS1 game and for some weird reason its not BC with that model of the PS2. Thats the only thing I can think of, hope that helps and good luck.

i would like to say that if you are not using a playstation to play your ps games then not all the games will work 100% that goes for ps2 and ps3 and even epsxe.

i have 13 games which do not run in my ps3
ten of them work in my ps2
all 13 work in my ps

so really there could be more than 1 thing going on is the game 100% compatible with your revision of ps2??

i have trouble with mostly ea games, 989 studio and infogrames on my ps3

It's not the HDTV's fault. It's the consoles for not adequately supporting better video cables.

Luckily we don't have that much of a problem in Europe. All our consoles support RGB SCART in some shape or form. So we don't have to deal with shitty s-video, or be forced to use component etc.

I wondered about that. I have a slim, and ps1 games are unplayable with a dual shock 2, and using a boot disc for backups rarely works.
