3D IS THE FUTURE OF GAMING. . . gimmicks

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

There's an interesting thing with the Virtual Boy compared to 3D out of your TV. With the virtual boy the only thing you can see is the 3D screen. It's very similar to how the real world is, aside from the fact that you lose your peripheral vision. With 3D TVs, though, you have a portion where stuff is coming out of the screen, but then just to the side is the normal world. It really causes it to feel like a gimmick that doesn't add to the experience the same way that standard 3D graphics do (which also have advantages with regards to content creation, which is one reason the industry dropped 2D).

I own one of those Headplay HMDs and it has the ability to display 3D stereoscopic or whatever its called. Its like a Virtual Boy strapped to your head only more light weight. I haven't tried the 3D output yet because I have no 3D hardware or software, but when the PS3 gets that FW upgrade, I'd like to try it.

What is all this fuss about? I tired that Card that came out a while ago, It just made the zombies in l4D harder to shoot because they appeared in one spot, but in reality were in a spot close, but not at that exact spot. Also, with that set the HUD looks like a pane of glass held in front of you kind of. But it hurts to refocus your eyes over and over and over.

The problem with 3D is the strain on my eyeballs, it feels like they're being sucked out of my head.

This talk of HUDs makes me curious about subtitling in 3D films. Has anyone ever watched a 3D movie with subtitles turned on? Were they readable? Where to they sit in relation to the 3D scene?

I assume it's exactly the same as HUDs in game. They sort of sit on top of the scene. Like for example, you were watching a film (in 2d), and somebody held a piece of paper somewhere halfway between you and the screen. It's like the text is level with the frame of your screen and the scene is a distance behind it.

I will try it once PS3 gets firmware update but I don't think 3D is the future of gaming. I think it will be something people will try and then move on.

3D is the future of porn.

Let's hope so!

My GTX260 came with some 3D glasses, had a little play, was cool for about 15 minutes (I know these are the old school 3D glasses) but I didn't really like i that much, will be interesting to see how it develops, I cant see it becoming mainstream until the glasses aspect is removed.

I saw once a porno movie like that in the mall. It already exists.

Now, on topic.

Jrecee, I don¡t want to be that guy but you don't really give any arguments. You just say "it may be fun for a while but not for long". Well, I don't think you own the Nvidia 3D glasses so I very much doubt you are in a position to argue that.

It's like surround gaming. Most people say it's a gimmick, that it's really expensive, that it will never catch on, that it sucks because you notice the edges of the screen, and so on.
However people are already getting it and there's no reason to think it's not better even if the technology isn't there yet or it's expensive.

Consider also that most games currently avalible have not been developed with 3D on mind so the result may vary. It's like playing games using three screens. Those who work well work like a charm and it's amazing but then you get games with insane HUD stretch or broken support and it sucks.

On the subtitles comment. In Avatar they appear close to the screen but outside the picture. It's not uncomfortable to read them.
