So I suck at Street Fighter....HELP

Post by turbolegs »

I recently decided it was time for me to expand my horizons a little and branch out into fighters beyond Tekken.

I thought I would start with some classic Street Fighter 2 on my PS2 in the 15th anniversary package. Unfortunately, i'm getting destroyed.

I remember playing this on the SNES, and getting by on easy. At the moment im getting destroyed on this difficulty.

Any help would be appreciated, as well as anything to do with what the speed differences are etc, the number of options available is truly baffling to me.

First of all you need to understand this is Freakin' Street Fighter and not a lame automatic combo like Tekken. you need to do your own combos, play more defense and learn all the special techniques.

I would recommend picking one character, learning all of their moves, like repeat them over and over until it's muscle memory, and then learn when to actually use them. Also, don't throw random hadokens and shoryukens out at just any time, learn when to use them when your enemies are most vulnerable.

As always start with Ryu.

. Learn all his moves
. Use DOWN + HP or Dragon Punch when people fly kick you
. The whole game is about being able to control the space the other player is going to move into, if they dash at you, what move can you use? If they fly kick you what move can you use, etc.
. HOLD BACK constantly.
. Learn to throw your super, and learn when to throw it.

My friend recently wanted to get into Street Fighter to I let him borrow my SFIV so he could learn the basic moves in challenge mode (Even though a lot of the moves are not in the earlier games with many character, for Ryu / Ken it will work fine), he picked up pretty well doing this and now he is pretty bloody good at SFIII (The game we play most against one another) and Alpha.

Sorry I dont have any amazing advice, for me I think to get better at it you need to just play the shit out of it, with real people is so much better, but if you dont know the basics learn them then get a buddy into it.

turbolegs, by your post I assume you are playing single player against the AI.

If so, you need to understand something about the Anniversary Collection. The AI (and the game engine) is based on that of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo - which is widely considered the toughest AI in any Street Fighter game. Maybe even the toughest AI in any fighting game, period. Even on the lowest difficulty levels it will cheat and predict your moves before you pull them. It also adapts to your fighting style so you constantly need to change your game. If you are new to the game it is unlikely you will make it past the 3rd or even 2nd character very often.

Unless you understand the game mechanics very well you will loose... a lot.

Oh, and since the game engine is based on SSF2T that means old school timing. You have a smaller window of time to input special move commands and to link combos. If you are serious about learning this game you should also stay away from newer incarnations of the series. The lax timing in later games will really hurt you.

I would suggest starting out with Blanca. His special moves are very basic to pull off and he's very quick, which allows for errors. Later move to more advanced players like Guile.

The timing in SF4 is hardly lax. I can never get past the individual challenge stages where you have to execute combos. It's maybe a little lax on some individual moves, but the combos require crazy speed and precision.

That's like saying that compared to Daggerfall Oblivion's world is tiny.
