For a softmod, it's probably riskier (never tried it myself) but with a hard-mod, it's a must. I have a 500GB drive loaded with all of my games and movies. It's a portable media center since at my in-laws summer place, we don't have cable/satellite.
There is no risk upgrading the HDD if you have a hard mod, there is NO WAY you can screw it up! you plug in the hard drive and format. :D

Even if you have a soft mod, just keep a copy of your eeprom.bin and there is no risk in upgrading the HDD. It really is a necessity if you want to play your games from the hard disk, which is one of the major benefits of having it modded in the first place. I never use my optical drive for anything.

I copied the files to the Action Replay, but when it's connected to the Xbox there's no copy option? Do I need to update my dash, or what?

EDIT: AAAHHH you have to push right on the d-pad first. That was not clear at all.

Yeah it is a bit weird that. It took me a while to figure out how to copy the damn thing! It's a fault of the xbox though, not the most user friendly of memory managers.
