It still works, direct dial lets you just call a buddy's house with your X-Band as long as they have their X-Band set up to receive an incoming call. The paid service was only for matchmaking with random people.

It's like the Sega Saturn modem, there were no servers as the consoles directly communicated as if it were a phone call.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

The Xband is not a direct dial modem, so it does not work. It was programmed to always dial a centralized server, and once that shut down in April of 1997, so did whole service.

But it still works as a JP->US convertor. No need to cut, shave import carts!

Egads your right. What was I thinking when I said it was Direct dial - must have been thinking about when we use to play Daytona. What city were you in back then? I am curious if I played you. I hazily remember some usernames. I played as Jackal and was, and still am, in Atlanta. But thanks to my old man having unlimited long distance on his business line at home, played all over the states after 10pm est.

I played in Fort Wayne, IN. Mostly played Super Mario Kart, with a bit of SSF II and Kirby. Played under the name $aVaGe DeAtH. Were you on it until the end?

I was only on for about a year but looking at the dates I was near the end (I stopped in early 97 - when people started hacking their icons). Never knew you could play Mario Kart on it that is really cool. I kept trying to get better at Street Fighter but it was all for nothing. Had I known Mario Kart worked on it I would have kept it going. Mario Kart is just plain and simple fun.
