I don't think I've ever seen an 8 button fighter. 6 button fighters are rare enough as it is. It's essentially Street Fighter and Darkstalkers. Then you've got Mortal Kombat and Guilty Gear as 5 button fighters, and pretty much everything else is a 4 button.

The 8 buttons are basically there as a failsafe. Most games allow mapping of buttons, but for the handful that don't, it's a nice way to ensure that users can actually get to what they need (particularly pre-setup and save).

Also if you're an old school Neo Geo fan, you can map your buttons to the top row of 4 like the old MVS machines.

For the record there are no fighting games that use more than 6 buttons. You'll find a lot of players actually remove the last two buttons and replace them with plugs so that they don't accidentally use them (particularly at tournament level).

Only the first two Mortal Kombat games are 5 buttons, the rest are 6. MK vs. DC Universe is 8. The only other ones I can think of is Robo-Pit 1 & 2, but those work better with standard controllers. 8 button joystick setups just don't work well.

Is that 8 separate buttons, or are there "shortcut" buttons (like in the console ports of the various Street Fighter games, where buttons 7 and 8 are shortcuts for pressing all three punch/kick)?

Though I got curious and found out MK vs. DC universe is only 6 buttons as well, I was told it was 8 but 2 are shortcuts set by default.
