I'll take your word for it. I might order a new laser because i'm pretty sure thats the problem. But at the same time i might look up some mods. The ps2 is already broken, so nothing i do could screw it up more. Any cool ones you know about?
Free MC Boot, it's the single best mod you can perform for your PS2 outside of buying a physical modchip (Modchips are complex and require experienced soldering skills) and is extremely simple to use once installed to your memory card.

Installing it to your memory card is a bit of a pain n the ass, but just talk to a few of the guys here on the forums and they'll be more than glad to do it for you.
What does it do?

It allows you to run practically anything you'd like on your PS2 and also allows the use of internal Hard Drives (Or in your case an external USB Hard Drive) to load games, media applications ala XBMC and much more.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

No, playing an Xbox game on a PS2 is literally impossible.

The only drawback to Free MC Boot is no PS1 backup support.
