A lot of people are playing those, so I am wondering if I should jump ship.
I know it eats a lot of time, but the question is, is it worth it?
I tested out WoW , and I am not sure...
I was put out in a tribe like place and I was told to kill some animals to gain experience, then kill more to get a scroll, then kill more stuff to get a new objective.
It looks like they are just giving you objectives to keep you engaged , its not worth while. I am not sure if it gets better or if other MMORPG games got a better gameplay/objectives.
I think it would be exciting to do stuff like going into the forest to bring back the red diamond, then you will be awarded some kind of weapon to fight enemies.
But to kill 10 animals, to find a scroll, the scroll says to kill more stuff to find another stuff, its like just keeping you playing.
Same stuff over and over again
I can't give a fair judgement about it , i really hardly know anything about the subject
The choice of MMORPG
Re: The choice of MMORPG
Unless you know other people who have been playing and are lvled up, thats pretty similar to how they all start. In a sense they get better if you socialize, make friends and go raiding or join the PvP wars. Other wise, for the most part you are running stupid errands for NPCs

Here ya go. Best MMO and best game period, in my opinion. It's completely free so it wouldn't hurt to try it out for a few hours and see what you think. There is a cash shop (mostly for clothing and storage space) which is not crucial to buy so it doesn't ruin the game.

What you've experienced is how most MMOs go down. Now, the storylines pick up a bit more when you get out of the initial areas, but the gameplay of "get quests, do task, get reward" is the core of an MMO. In WoW's case, you also have the dungeons, which you will do a lot of once you reach max level. The later dungeons tend to have the most lore surrounding them. Finally, at max level you can also get involved in the raiding scene, where you and 10-25 of your buddies will conquer a large dungeon with intricate boss encounters. At that stage, though, the game involves a lot of repetition. You do the same raids every week (though it takes a while to actually beat the whole thing the first time) and you'll spend a decent amount of time farming for things like potions and crafting materials. You really need a good group of friends (who you might meet in game) to keep you coming back once you've done everything once.

Once you get to around level 40 in WoW the game gets a lot better. Some of the dungeons are really cool looking and fun to run through with a group of friends etc.

Quit WoW now! It ruins your social life. No game is good enough to require months of playtime.

Im not addicted by any means. Also, it hasn't affected my social life at all.foulweather wrote:Quit WoW now! It ruins your social life. No game is good enough to require months of playtime.

And if you ask me, $15 a month to play a game you enjoy with near infinite replay value a lot is better than paying $60 a game that will last you 8-10 hours.

Re: The choice of MMORPG
I'd say if you didn't like WoW, you're probably not going to like most MMORPGs. Most involve either having several good people to play together or a huge amount of time to get the best gear/higher levels for people to really get fun out of them. I played PE, COH, and WOW. In all cases I did find cool people to play with that weren't concerned with rushing through the game and having the best stuff, but I still got bored within 6-8 months. MMORPGs might just not be for you.

Re: The choice of MMORPG
It's good that WoW worked out for you, RyaNtheSlayA. But in my personal experience you are an exception. Now my player sample might be a bit skewed since all the players I know are long time raiders. And god knows raiding is just the dumbest thing to do in an MMO. It feels like trying to finish a game with no end... Either way I tend to discourage people from playing. Especially if they're perfectionists, cause MMOs suck up time like nothing else.
Anyways. As far as gameplay goes, MrPoPo is right on. WoW is very different at level cap. Don't let the stupid grind and fetch quests turn you off. At level cap most players are looking to collect better loot by joining organized groups to either clear dungeons or pvp. Both of which is a lot more fun than the mindless grind of leveling up.

Re: The choice of MMORPG
I dont mind the objective then reward method, but if it makes sense
I mean look at the achievement in GTA4 where you have to kill 100 pigeons, thats stupid.
Something like beating a boss is much better as an objective
I am not sure if I am out of luck, but I got no friends that play MMORPGs
not to mention, aren't there better worlds than WoW? Something in Space or Age of Conan.
There is an old dream come true, where people can come and interact in a 3D world, but it seems limited now somehow.
