Zone of the Enders. If you liked Devil May Cry, there's no way you won't like this series.

Trying to make sense of this post gave me a headache.

The PS2 Castlevania games play a bit similarly to DMC, altough they aren't as good. Of course, the God of War games and their numerous clones are also similar.

2D games in this style? Ummmm.... ANY beat-em up from NES Kung Fu on up?

Not exactly sure what you are looking for, but here are some suggestions that might fit your criteria:

Castlevania Curse of Darkness
Dead to Rights
Maximo
Star Wars Episode III

I can't really think of a lot of straight run and gun games.

I think MDC is probably most closely related to scrolling beat em ups and fighting games. It's pretty much a combination of the two, I don't know if either of those on their own would be very satisfying to you though.

legacy of kane for ps2 was a lot like DMC, you could always play the sequels, I think Onimusha was like that, someone correct me if I'm wrong( I haven't played them)-The second and third Prince of Persia games took after that kind of style IMO, less about puzzles more action and stuff, and current gen, CONAN!!!!

River City Ransom. That was the first 2D beat em up that I remember blending in some RPG elements for different upgrades and fighting moves.
