Good handheld RPGs?

Post by jfe2 »

I've been playing Beggar Prince on my Nomad lately, and it got me wondering about RPGs on handheld systems. I've played a few good RPGs on the GBA and the DS, but other than Golden Sun, they were all mostly ports or remakes, such as FFIII and Chrono Trigger DS.

What are some of your favorite handheld RPGs? I'm looking to expand my horizons to some Gameboy or Gamegear stuff and figured I would see what people here like to play.

This is a good topic. I've always thought RPG's lend themselves well to portables. Does anyone know if the Neo Geo Pocket Color had any good ones?

Not sure about the Neo Geo Pocket Color, but I did just read that the Wonderswan Color had the original Final Fantasy ported to it. Too bad it's import only though. :(

I actually have the patched version of the ROM, but I don't own a flash cart for the GBA. :(

Anyone want to get rid of one?

I played Mother 3 on my PSP via emulator. That is as good as it gets.

Etrian Odyssey 1 & 2 are brilliant DS RPGs. I can't wait for the third one. And no listing of handheld RPGs would be complete without mention of Pokemon.

I've heard great things about Etrian Odyssey. I'll look into getting those. Nostalgia for the DS looks pretty good too, but I've heard next to nothing about it since it's release.

I played Pokemon Blue when it first came out and I had a lot of fun with it! I haven't played anything since then, pretty much due to the fact that I'm overwhelmed with all of the different versions that have come out since then. Any suggestions on which ones to play and in which order?

Also, has anyone played the Shining Force game for the Gamegear? I've a Shining Force noob and was thinking about playing through that series as well.

On the GBA, I'd recommend picking up Riveria: The Promised Land, which is a corking little RPG.

The GBA is well stocked for SRPGs - Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Ogre Battle, the Fire Emblem titles and Yggdra Union.

If you want ARPGs, check out the various Mana titles, although the quality varies a fair bit. If you'd put Zelda in this category, then I'd also heartily recommend Minish Cap.
