I think you're giving Halo too much credit. While it wasn't dual-analog, several N64 FPS games offered this style of control scheme. One could use the four C buttons for forward/backward movement and strafing, while leaving the analog stick as a free look, allowing one to easily move, aim, and fire simultaneously. I know Goldeneye offered this control scheme, though I don't think it was the default. I wouldn't be surprised if other, earlier games had it at well.

EDIT:

Actually, I just checked and it looks like Goldeneye DID offer dual-analog controls like you describe (except that the look controls were on the left stick instead of the right). You just had to be willing to dual-wield controllers to use it.

Holding two N64 controllers? That sounds kinda uncomfortable, but I'm amazed they included something like that. It really proves what that team was capable of in matters of thinking outside the box. They weren't limited to emulating a keyboard-mouse type of control and went all out to make the controls work for consoles.
It's exactly the type of people we need today to make RTS work on the consoles of today. C&C3 wasn't that great because it still relied on trying to emulate keyboard-mouse controls.

I want to see a mod that actually fuses two controllers together in order to pull off that dual-analog control in GoldenEye.
