Just got my GenMobile today. I was surprised at how small it is. It's even smaller than my PSP-2000 (but thicker of course, due to the cart slot). The volume control works fine on mine (and the speaker is very loud). The music and sound effects sound different than on Sega-made hardware because it's based on emulation or something. The build quality isn't the best. It's not made by Sega so what do you expect. It's very lightweight but doesn't feel like it will break any time soon. I don't really like the dpad. I found it nearly impossible to do a simple Hadoken in Street Fighter II' SCE, and I've been playing SF for over a decade. The cart slot also has an extremely tight grip. I've had to push the system against my stomach and pull the cart out with my whole arm.

Phantasy Star IV works if you start a new game, but you can't load a save file. The screen where you load your save file is all garbled up and it just goes black after you select a file.

I also bought a Retrogen so I'll see how that one is.

Ignore the scratches on the screen. I didn't take the plastic protective film off while taking the picture (Being the idiot that I am, I actually didn't know it was there and thought the screen already came scratched).

I like it so far despite the few drawbacks.

Wow, that is a LOT smaller than I thought it would be! The Nomad looks like a beast next to it! Hopefully mine gets here soon. I'm really looking forward to messing around with it.

Here's the Retrogen and GenMobile compared:

Thanks for posting those pics! How do you think they stack up against each other? I just got my GenMobile in the mail and then picked up a Nomad a few days ago, and the GenMobile, while being an excellent little portable, just doesn't hold up to the Nomad in terms of sound and graphics. The GenMobile screen is so tiny that some text is unreadable, and the sound is just a bit off. It doesn't make the thing unplayable by any means, but I was wondering how the Retrogen measures up in your opinion.

I haven't messed around with the Retrogen much yet. I don't mind the different music/sound (I have numerous model 1 Geneses...Genesii for that). Some games just sound different and interesting while others are just murdered (Streets of Rage 2). The dpad on both is mediocre; Street Fighter 2 is unplayable. Although the Retrogen has a bigger screen and text may be more easily read, it has a smaller viewing angle and a greenish tint that is very noticeable on blacks and yellows. The GenMobile's screen while smaller, is brighter, has a larger viewing angle, and doesn't have the green tint. The volume control knob feels rough on the Retrogen while it's smooth on the GenMobile. The Retrogen comes with a usb cable while the GenMobile gives you an ac adapter. They both use the same batteries (5 volts, 300mA) and the same usb port so you can interchange the cables (I'm charging the Retrogen with the GenMobile's ac cable in the pics). The GenMobile also gives you a wrist strap.

It just really comes down to what you want: larger, subpar screen and crappy games or smaller, better screen and good games. The Nomad wins in compatibility, sound, and controls while the clones win in the screens, batteries, and compactness.

So which one would you recommend?

I like the GenMobile better. Wider viewing angle, slightly brighter screen, no green tint, much better built-in games, wall charger, color scheme (not a fan of Retrogen's silver buttons), smoother volume dial, and that it's licensed.

I heard clones were terrible though. Are there any REALLLLY good handheld clones out there. They seem like a blast, but i dont want mine to have this problem that you are talking about.

I also bought the Genmobile, its working just fine for me. Its a great portable system and I have to remember to bring it when I go on long trips. I wish I could save my game progress, but its not a big deal since the original Gen didn't have that feature either. Other than that I love it!

I dunno, man. Wouldn't it be best just to mod the PSP and run a Genesis emulator?
