I was thinking some of you could tell how or why you started and what started you out. Truthfully what got me back in was looking around on the internet and finding Racketboy. I had been seeing these old Saturns at a local flea market for awhile and was thinking about buying one. I new the games were hard to come by so I researched downloading them (that is how I learned about torrent also.) I then begin to research modchips for the Saturn and here I find myself on Racketboy. So I buy one from him, I think I sent him money by paypal but I am not sure.
Anyway from there it all just kind of blew up. I am probably now at about 1500 games and have migrated over to buying originals of the bootlegs I started with. Now I am even passing on my modded Saturn in a trade to the next person in line LOL.
This is my third time also, this time though my games stay with me for good LOL. It would be cool to hear how everyone else started.
By the way Racketboy, do you remember selling a chip to a guy with the email of hillbillywrench -@- yahoo.com?

Re: What game/system started you off on collecting?
I had my original SNES and the PS2 I picked up near launch in 2001, but I was pretty much playing PC games until 2002 or 2003 when I picked up a minty boxed NES with a cheap labeless Super C for $1 at an anime convention I was working at. I also looked over the stuff Mad Gear had and picked up a few SFami games from him. I started recollecting the NES games I'd gotten rid of when my original system went to crap and buying more SNES games I didn't own. A co-worker picked up a Japanese Saturn soon after, then I got a Genesis and the madness started.

Recollecting, maybe that is what some of us should call ourselves, "recollectors"!

Re: What game/system started you off on collecting?
Good question. I think it was when my wife and I moved her parents into a new house. We found my old SNES down in their basement. I went nuts because I couldn't find my NES that I had also left there. It must have gotten thrown out one of those times her parents were going through their crap and they remembered how much they hate me. So I decided I had to buy another one, then I remembered how much I loved my 2600 that I played into the ground and picked that up from Unleaded Logic whose friend happened to be selling a Jaguar and CD drive. BAM! From this point I was only missing a Nintendo 64, which my brother-in-law happened to be giving away. My wife decided she was tired of all of my annoying systems that she never played growing up so she made me become a traitor to Nintendo (when I was growing up you were either a Nintendo kid or a Sega kid, but it doesn't matter much now that Sega is out of business I am older than 8 years old) and pick up a Genesis from Classic Gamer. Now, of course, my OCD dictates that I MUST get the rest of the Sega systems so the collecting continues! Eventually I want to get the other two old school Atari systems also.

I have yet to find that elusive 5200, but I did score a 7800 not long ago.

I've been very big on collecting all kinds of Castlevania stuff from the games to posters, books and misc stuff. Its such a great series and just can't stop. Theres is so much cool shit to collect and easily spent over $600.00 on Castlevania stuff in the last 5 years. The PS2 has to be my biggest collection and what really started my game collecting disease. I have about 250 PS2 games and climbing. I own all the other systems as well but the PS2 just such a great library of games that can be had cheaply.....for now.
Re: What game/system started you off on collecting?
I played games when I was a lot younger, back in the genesis model 1 days up until the end of the N64, then I grew up a bit. It wasn't until Aug of 08 (i had a wii and ps3 at the time) that I found an NES and SMB3 at a goodwill for less than 10$. That started back my collection of retro stuff.

If by collecting, you mean system-specific game collecting, it would have to have started for me on the Gamecube. The game that set it off was Tales of Symphonia. It really made me feel like I was getting something better out of complete versions of games as opposed to just discs or backups. I was a Gamecube-exclusive collector for a while, that is until I saw Persona 3 for $12 and Persona 4 for $20, both complete, for sale. That definitely started off my PS2 collection. For my Genesis collection, most of it was inadvertently acquired through people who didn't need their old genesis, and gave me the system and games. My Saturn collection will likely start soon, as one of my friends found a box of about 60 complete Saturn games that his dad got for free in a yard sale several years back. Sweet.
