Neo Geo AES ac adapter
Neo Geo AES ac adapter
I just bought a Neo Geo AES and i want to know what kind of AC adapter do i need to use...? Do i have to buy neo geo specific ac adapter or can i use another like a genny snes or nes adapter....?
Re: Neo Geo AES ac adapter
I know different regions/revisions of the home systems use different power supplies. Not sure which is which though. Try asking in the tech support forum on neo-geo.com
Re: Neo Geo AES ac adapter
I just took a photo of my Japanese AES AC adapter. Maybe it will be helpful.

Just a note: this is a Pro Pow3 adapter. This is for a high serial number AES (over #120,000).
For lower serial number AES consoles, you'll need a Pow (not Pow3) AC adapter. The voltage is very different between the two.

ApolloBoy wrote:Earlier AESes use a regulated 5V power supply so you definitely don't want to use a model 1 Genesis power supply or similar. Later ones use a 9-10V power supply and you can use a Genesis power supply with those. You don't need to look at the serial number to tell them apart, just look at what's on the sticker above the SN. If it says "PRO-POW" you need the 5V PSU, if it's "PRO-POW-3", "NEO-POW-3" or "PRO-POW-E", you need the other PSU.

Re: Neo Geo AES ac adapter
So, this is at your own risk of course, but if the barrel plug on the end is the same size, a model 1 Genesis pack will probably work. Model 1 Gen is 9 V, 1200 mA (more is ok, it will only pull what it needs), and negative tip. For instance a TG-16 says 10.5 V on the bottom, but it perfectly happy with a 9 V Genesis pack.

Whoa whoa whoa.
You definitely need to put the right adapter on your Neo or you will blow out the power board.
The quick and dirty method is to look at your Serial Number. Mine is like 000152, so it's a very low model. These use a more rare ac adapter, but they can be made fairly easily.
The higher serial number systems use a more common ac adapter.
If you tried a the genny adapter on the first adapter type, you may have caused some damage. I would also recommend neo-geo.com technical forum. I went through this same ordeal about 4 years ago. There might even b a sticky.

Actually since the US and Japanese systems are probably the exact same inside except for the jumper setting, you'd probably be better off with a US pack since our power is 110-120v and Japanese power is 100v. I sometimes wonder if I'm slowly killing my Duo RX brick since its getting more voltage than its expecting. I'm sure the extra bit of voltage is within tolerances, but still.Arbitern1 wrote:Mine is serial number 211166.....Any help...Its a jap neo geo.....need a link to the right AC adapter please^.^ I have been using a genny adapter on it and it seems to work just fine but i'd really like to use a neo geo adapter on it....

Re: Neo Geo AES ac adapter
The trick to finding an AC adapter that is compatible is selecting one that has a voltage as close to the original as possible. You won't damage the system by selecting a lower voltage, but there is a chance you can damage it with a higher voltage. Also make sure it can supply enough current. It won't hurt the system if the adapter can supply more current than is needed. Though if the supply provides more current than is needed that can effect how it operates, such as how much load must be put on it to get the listed voltage. You also need to check the polarity. This is denoted by the symbol on the adaptor that looks like this: --( o--
That being said a console doesn't actually use the voltage listed on the adapter. The voltage it uses is determined the voltage regulator. A voltage regulator is simple solid state device that takes a slightly higher voltage and drops it down to the desired voltage. Most digital electronics use the following voltages: 3V, 3.3V, 5V, 9V, and 12V. According to wikipedia the older systems run off of 5 volts and the newer systems run at 9 volts. If any one knows the regulator used in the console I can look up its specs for you. It should be near the power plug.
Hope this helps.
