List of High Resolution Games on Classic Consoles

Post by Infinite_Kaos »

I'm been doing a lot of work lately with classic consoles and RGB output, upscalers, deinterlacers, etc. and found certain games give unexpected results do to their resolution.

All consoles had a "standard" resolution in which most if not all games were coded, but some supported alternate, high resolution, and interlaced video modes. I've been trying to find lists of these games for a few weeks now, but have found limited and scattered information.

So I'd like to start one. Below is all the information I've been able to obtain. Any help adding missing titles or correcting wrong information would be much appreciated.

Doesn't Nights on the Saturn have a widescreen resolution?

It does have a widescreen mode, but it uses the same resolution, and the TV needs to be manually set in 16:9 mode. Honestly, I could never see much of a difference.

Several PS1 and N64 games have 16:9 modes with varying qualities, although all that I've come across still retain the same internal resolution. Is it worth adding these games, or making a separate section?

Xonticus: That should be Soul Blade. Thanks...

I could have sworn I heard something about Lords of Thunder for the Turbo Duo being 240p. Is this true?

I think so. Widescreen is just a better thing to have, being that there's more visible area on the screen.

From Wiki on the PCE/TG16 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pc_engine
Resolution

* X (Horizontal) Resolution: variable, maximum of 565 (programmable to 282, 377 or 565 pixels, or as 5.37mhz, 7.159mhz, and 10.76mhz pixel dot clock)[12]
* Y (Vertical) Resolution: variable, maximum of 242 (programmable in increments of 1 scanline)
* The majority of TurboGrafx-16 games use 256×239[12], though some games, such as Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective did use 512×224. Chris Covell's 'High-Resolution Slideshow' uses 512×240.

I remember Chrono Cross having a (I think) full 640x480 interlaced mode while viewing the character model in the status menu.
Ghost in the Shell PS1 has some wide-screen modes, but at the same resolution.

Since the internal resolution generated by these games is the same there's no increase in picture detail. In fact, Jet Force Gemini (I'll have to check other RARE titles) letterboxes the image when in 16:9 mode so you really get less.

lisalover1: Maximum resolution for TG16/PCE is 565x242. Max known resolution in a commercial game is 512x224. All TG16/PCE games are technically 240p. We'd need to check horizontal resolution in LoT, but I think it's standard res.

Next-Gen: Thanks! Didn't know about that one...

64-bit: You're right. I forgot about the menus...
