mod chip problems

Post by xvirus »

Hi, this is my second time attempting to install a mod chip on my model 2 32-pin saturn(first chip was defective so I just got a replacement). First thing I tried this time was the A-B method after sanding down the sides a bit for a good fit. The saturn seemed to boot fine.. disc spun and booted right into an original game. The power cord on my saturn was a bit loose and got pulled out enough(it falls right out of the socket for some reason) to turn the saturn off. After that, the saturn will turn on and just say "checking disc" with the disc not spinning. I've tested and it does work without the chip in. I've tried with both a+b and soldering to the chip. Oddly.. this was pretty much the same thing that happened with my first chip except that one let me load a second game(a copied one which I think I burnt wrong since it loaded as an audio cd) before it decided to stop spinning. Any idea on this? I've tried all the stuff on the troubleshooting page for both chips.

I'm not sure if I read this right -- did you get a burned game to boot once?
Have you tried making a direct copy of one of your original games?

When all my saturn did was play CDs as audio, I used a wire connecting points A+B, you can try that, it worked for me, no idea why the bridge wasn't working. Also, don't file that much off the mod chip, that is what I found worked. I guess I got lucky, because I have had like 3 of racketboy's chips. I hope that helps.

I never got a burned game to boot. As long as the chip is in(I've tried A+B bridge with just a solder bridge and with wire connecting them) then the drive wont even spin. I don't think I filed too much off either.. enough that it was still a pretty snug fit.

when connecting A+B with wire, make sure there is not solder bridge going across A+B, because the wire acts as the bridge. when the disk doesn't spin, that is usually because the modchip is not getting power, so check the 2nd power slot on the power supply, and make sure you don't have a bunch of solder on that, use desoldering braid, to remove solder is there is too much. Check the 21 pin cable and make sure the pins inside it are not bent, other than that, I am not sure. I finally got a modchip to work on about my 20th try, I believe, so I don't know what the deal is.
