Boat travel from US aka how to get to europe w/o flying

What I'm really looking for is a cruise that goes from here to greece, stays there 4 or 5 nights, then comes back. I don't want to do the typical cruise trip where all you really get to see is stuff near the port. I'd like to be able to venture in deeper than that and maybe not even see the cruise for a few days.

I'm also wanting to do the same thing to egypt. . . and a bunch of other countries. Maybe if I was just hopping around small islands one night in port each would be fine, but somewhere like greece I want to stay for a while longer and not just do the griswald "We saw that now on to the next thing!" vacation.

There probably isn't enough demand for a direct US to Greece cruise. You probably end up in Barcelona first (well, you would through Royal Caribbean), hit up a few other spots, and then end up in Greece. Take a Mediterranean trip and get off at Greece, then schedule another boat for somewhere else after a few days. I know for a fact it can be done, although I have no ideas about the details.

Or, take a cruise to Barcelona or whatever, then a one way trip to Piraeus, Alexandria or wherever on a different boat. You'll probably end up with a night or two in Barcelona.
