Boat travel from US aka how to get to europe w/o flying

Post by Jrecee »

Has anyone done this? Is it possible? Are there cruises that go from the US to europe? I want to go to Greece/Egypt/Madeira/etc. but I don't like flying.

To be completely honest... is this a joke? How could you not know that there are cruises across oceans? It's such a basic thing.

If you've got the time, they beat the hell out of flying.

Other than cruises, you can always sail. There are some people using yachts and the such. Stuff like this guy is writing about:

Wow, more power to you. I am afraid of boats more than I am of flying. The longest I have ever been on a boat was from Hiroshima to Miyajima. That is like 25 minutes!!

It's a fun ride, though! I took the fairy to Miyajima Town or whatever the other place you can take the ferry to is called.

I've taken the one between Fukuoka and Pusan in Korea a few times. It's about a three hour trip. I have a younger sister that works on cruise ships, though. She doesn't even know how many countries she's been to. I'm a bit envious!

Awkward typo! Or maybe the ride was particularly fun...

I thought it was a basic thing too. In fact, I couldn't believe it when I started actually searching and kept coming up with nothing. I checked several popular cruise line sites as well as just googling "cruises from US to Greece" "Cruises from florida to greece" etc. Maybe there's just no direct cruises there? I found tons of cruises that go from european countries to greece, but nothing direct. I'll keep searching. . .

What I'm really looking for is a cruise that goes from here to greece, stays there 4 or 5 nights, then comes back. I don't want to do the typical cruise trip where all you really get to see is stuff near the port. I'd like to be able to venture in deeper than that and maybe not even see the cruise for a few days.

I'm also wanting to do the same thing to egypt. . . and a bunch of other countries. Maybe if I was just hopping around small islands one night in port each would be fine, but somewhere like greece I want to stay for a while longer and not just do the griswald "We saw that now on to the next thing!" vacation.

You might want to look into talking with a travel agent. As I understand it they're very good at being able to figure out how to put together a vacation package like you've described.
