That's the version you want to use. Try some other games and other media to see if you can narrow down the cause of the problem.

Although the launcher runs original GC games, so I am guessing its not a problem with the launcher

My homebrew channel is telling me that I can't update due to some kind of cMIOS thing, Will it update if I upgrade to the latest firmware?

Shall I install the GC backup cMIOS then install firmware update, or shall I start with the firmware update first?
I really do not want to brick my Wii mainly because I really want to play retrogames(VC) on the tv and run Gamecube games, there is no other single machine that would do that.

I do recall installing a GC cMios but am not sure,
if each installed cMIOS will over-ride the other thats great, but if each one is different then I am scared it will over clutter my Wii. I have no idea what a cMIOS is or what it would do I just follow instructions

If your going to update to the latest firmware I recommend doing that first. _DO NOT_ update through nintendo, with the latest firmware it is safer to update manually. Follow the guide I linked you to (this one), the first portion of it will update you to firmware 4.2 safely.

Once you update you'll continue to the "modify 4.2" section of the guide. The first step will install bootmii, a small application that will allow you to make and restore NAND backups. With a NAND backup and bootmii installed to boot2 you'll never have to worry about bricking your Wii, if you do brick it you can always restore the NAND backup you made and things will be just as they were when you updated to 4.2. Here is the bad news though: All newer Wiis have fixed the exploit that allowed us to install bootmii to boot2. Bootmii can still be installed as an IOS on newer Wiis but it doesn't give you full brick protection. It can still give you partial brick protection when combined with an application called Priiloader though so it is still worth having installed and making a NAND backup.

After you have a NAND backup continue to follow the guide all the way through the "modify 4.2" section. When your done with it you'll have a fully softmodded Wii that supports all homebrew including backup loaders, DVD video, and loading data from usb HDDs.

As for you cMIOS problem: Yes newer version of it will overwrite older versions. If you already have a cMIOS installed and are having trouble loading backups I suspect that your media is the problem. The Wii is _really_ picky about reading blank DVD-Rs. I personally recommend using Verbatim blank media as I've never had a problem with it.

Another thing to keep it mind although it probably doesn't affect you: Newer Wiis WILL NOT read any type of burned media. The DVD video commands were removed from the drives firmware in latest Wiis which means they can not read anything other than retail Wii/Gamecube games.

Would a modchip help for this case?

Not at the moment, modchips do not work with the new drive. You can buy the older DVD drive separately and install it in a newer Wii though.

Well thanx for the great help, I will be testing it out and I will be back with the results.

My Wii is modded with Starfall, this shouldn't be a problem right?
I am really scared to brick my Wii, but its a 2008 one so i guess its all right

As long as you have Bootmii installed and made a backup of your NAND, you're safe.

I did as you told me guys
but when running the hackmii , the very first step, it tells me that it can\t install the homebrew channel because there is a corrupted IOS installed on the WIi.
It is the same error I got when I tried to update my homebrew channel

Now how can I fix this IOS issue?

This isn't a big issue...you've probably installed something like CIOSCORP that screwed up the IOS the homebrew channel is using.

I'm going to recommend the easiest fix for this which is going to go against what I said before.

Do this: Update to 4.2 through Nintendo then follow the guide from the "Modify 4.2" section onwards. As long as you don't lose power when it is updating boot2 to the latest version it will update without any problems. I updated one of my Wiis through Nintendo after softmodding it on 3.2 and all went well. In your situation I'm going to recommend this because it will give you a totally clean slate to work from.

If you'd prefer to update manually I can walk you through that but it is a lot more involved than "copy one big folder to SD card and run exploit" since you have that one corrupted IOS file. Honestly though if your _really_ paranoid about the 1 in 1000 chance it'll brick because of the update all you have to do is use a UPS to avoid the problem all together.

Happy modding :). I'll check back in later today to see how your coming along.

Well I got to the point where it says Trucha Bug Restore
and to click B
then chose to downgrade to IOS15

then it says run the Trucha Bug Restore again, and chose IOS15
but there is not IOS15
There is :
Press A to chose IOS36
and
press B to load without IOS

I restarted my Wii and chose to downgrade to IOS15 several times and it completed successfully
am I missing something?
