I believe the model 2 is easier to mod.

The only other difference is some slight cosmetics.

The model 1 has little slits on the sides as well as oval buttons and a glossy front panel.

The model 2 if fully matte, has round buttons, and doesnt have the slits on the sides.

As mentioned the easiest way to tell is to look at the buttons. The Model 1 has oval buttons, whereas the Model 2 has circle ones.

If you're gonna mod one, then mod the model 2. Its a hell of a lot easier to mod.

For a model 1, you have to essentially mod the modchip before instillation. I've never done it, but I'm about to take part in that frustration here pretty soon.
Systems: SNES, PS1, GBA SP, Gamecube, DS Lite, Wii, PS3 (Fully Backwards Compatible), Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, a Sega CD, and a Sega Saturn.

I think there is an access light on the model 1 which makes it easier for the swap trick.

so the only difference is just a few cosmetic changes? does anybody know why sega did this? from my understanding model upgrades are done to cut down on manufacturing costs and to make smaller. why didn't sega just make a more compact saturn instead of just changing the button shape.

No, there were more than just external changes. The main difference is that the Model 2 had different jumper locations on its board.
