VMU or Pocketstation into MP3 player ?

Post by nate »

howdy :)
so I was thinking it'd be cool to swap out the guts of an MP3 player like the sansa clip+ into the case of a Pocketstation or a Saga VMU. I like the sansa + cause it's got a microSD slot. if it'd fit I spose I'd prefer the Pocketstation just cause it's smaller.

however, I'm not smart enough to do it myself...if anyone was able to blaze a trail I could probably follow along though

just a thought...curious what people think. I wouldn't bother buying the parts unless someone who had experience thought it could work. I'd say I'm mechanically inclined, but electronically retarded

maybe I just want a reason to buy a Pocketstation

Oh, I've got one for sale!

As for turning it into an MP3 player, good luck! I think the most obvious advice is to get the absolute smallest one you can find. :D

around $50 plus shipping.

The link is in my signature. It's near the bottom of my wall of advertizing, under Sony. I have a white one left, but sold the clear one last week. I can probably find more if that sells, as they pop up from time to time here in Japan. Shipping isn't too bad, as it's small and light.

I can't promise but I would consider it for shure.
I got a 2gb sansa clip + off ebay for $33.00. but the slot can make it 18 gb and 32 gb will be available sometime.

I'm stuck on the clip+ for the SD card slot and it's got folder browsing. I hate id tags and most of my MP3's dont have them. it'd probably be closer to $75 in materials.

I'm wondering about the button layout, would you think it'd work best to wire the PS buttons to the sansa board or cut/fit the sansa buttons to the panel under the PS door ?

I mean I have tools galore and I build complicated models, but I've never done electronics. well I have taken apart a pair of Shure headphones and re soldered the cord, I mean small ear buds.

anyway, I haven't gotten my clip in the mail yet and I have no PS either. but seems like it'd be cool.

Just use squishy rubber topped tacts, the buttons will be a the easiest part, getting the screen to fit properly/work will be the tough one,
Also, there are Mp3 players on Dealextreme that are much cheaper and are a better form factor than the Sansa Players.

Personally, I'd recommend using a VMU instead, simply because of the price. You can pretty easily get a VMU for under $5 whereas pocketstations cost closer to $20-$30, and are much rarer, so the collector in me wants them to remain intact dammit!

I really hope you do this though, this sounds like it'd be really cool. Hell I could see this being a fairly marketable item to the videogame crowd.
