Hello,
I soft-modded my Wii to run backups, now it is running 3.2 firmware.
It runs Homebrew and backups, but it won't run Gamecube backups.
And I want to run Gamecube backups, so I thought I will install a chip BUT...
If I install a modchip, will it overrun the software mod?
Will I be not able to upgrade to higher firmware in the future?
Will it brick my Wii?
I want to reset my Wii fresh, and install a chip but I am too scared to brick. I still got no clear, detailed instruction set to do it.
Can any one help?
This is the last time I software mod a thing, its much worse than a chip.
A chip for a softmodded Wii
Re: A chip for a softmodded Wii
You can run GC backups in a softmodded Wii. Use the GameCube Backup Laucher by Wiigator. It has very good compatibility and is easy to use. If you still want to install a chip...
It will not override your softmod.
A future update could potentially brick your mod-chipped Wii.
It will only brick your Wii if you mess up the installation or a future update stops modchips.
I hope that helps!

Follow this tutorial at the purplecube.org:
http://thepurplecube.org/forums/index.p ... 602.0.html
If you have issues, post in the help forum. Rooskie, the resident Wii expert, will take care of you.
The tutorial covers Wii that are up to 4.1, not 4.2.
It's not that hard. Careful reading of tutorials and reading threads will get you there. I personally updated to 4.2 and used the tutorial as a guide to install the necessary software after googling to get the latest version and reading any gotchas.
But for you, I would stick with the tutorial as-is and then google for an offline 4.1 installer. The advantage of version 4 is to be able to use SDHC cards.

Re: A chip for a softmodded Wii
Are you saying if I follow these instructions I will be able to boot gamecube backups?
because that is what is important right now
My currently Wii is softmodded already, follow these instructions exactly is safe or are they for un-modded Wii's only. I cant find that any where,

Sorry the instructions does not include GC Backup Launcher. As the other poster mentioned, you want to install WiiGator's GC Backup Launcher....
Do you have it installed?

That will teach you how to install a custom cMIOS which will allow you to load Gamecube backups from disc. Please note that it is not possible to load them from a usb HDD and probably will never be.
By the way I recommend updating your Wii to the latest firmware and re-softmodding it. This guide is the best one I've seen for softmodding the latest firmware (4.2). I've personally used it to modify three Wiis without any problems.
I also recommend that you do not install a modchip. Mainly because it is not needed unless you want to load backups from disc at full speed. If your interested in loading backups getting a usb HDD is a much better option. Games load much faster from the HDD and you don't have to worry about burning them correctly or finding good media to burn them to. On top of all that modchips have to be updated with new software from time to time because the latest games are coming with new copyright protections, and from what I've seen such software updates aren't coming in a timely manner and a lot of older chips are no longer supported by their vendors.
In my humble opinion there is absolutely no reason to install a modchip in a Nintendo Wii now. You can do everything through softmods now and softmodding is very easy to do now when compared to a couple of years ago.

Re: A chip for a softmodded Wii
I have the GC backup launcher in my homebrew channel , it does not run a backup GC game that I got.Actually its funny because it runs all the way to the main menu then something goes weird.
Although the launcher runs original GC games, so I am guessing its not a problem with the launcher

My homebrew channel is telling me that I can't update due to some kind of cMIOS thing, Will it update if I upgrade to the latest firmware?
Shall I install the GC backup cMIOS then install firmware update, or shall I start with the firmware update first?
I really do not want to brick my Wii mainly because I really want to play retrogames(VC) on the tv and run Gamecube games, there is no other single machine that would do that.
I do recall installing a GC cMios but am not sure,
if each installed cMIOS will over-ride the other thats great, but if each one is different then I am scared it will over clutter my Wii. I have no idea what a cMIOS is or what it would do I just follow instructions

What game are you trying? Have you tried some other games?kingmohd84 wrote:I have the GC backup launcher in my homebrew channel , it does not run a backup GC game that I got.Actually its funny because it runs all the way to the main menu then something goes weird.

Not all GC games work with the backup launcher.
Re: A chip for a softmodded Wii
I tried Spartan Total Warrior
people have downloaded it on other forums and it worked for them,
plus I found it as supported in a huge spread sheet of GC compatibility

Re: A chip for a softmodded Wii
Which backup launcher are you using and what version?
I suggest trying some other games and see if those work or not. This will determine if the problem is your media, the way you're burning things, or something else.
