So I just made a weird impulse purchase...

I picked up a Gen X Genesis/NES 2-in-1 from eBay for $35 shipped. I really couldn't tell you why I did it, but lately all of these 2-in-1, 3-in-1, 46-in-1, etc., Famiclone consoles are appealing to the little kid collector in me. I don't want to buy them for potential future value purposes, but more so because the thought of having 2-in-1 systems would have made the "12 year old version of me's" head explode.

I'm thinking of heading to the flea market tomorrow to pick up a few things as well. I've had my eye on R.O.B. the robot, and if the guy still has it, I'm going to try to trade in an NES and a Genesis with a little cash for it. I'm also thinking of trading another NES and Genesis along with some cash for a Retro Duo and a RetroMini X to a guy at another booth.

Am I going crazy?! I know I am probably wasting a bit of cash here, but they just seem so awesome, no matter how cheaply made they may be.

Purists can say whatever they want about the original hardware, but these combination systems have their value. Not only do they reduce console clutter, they also prevent your original hardware from incurring more wear & tear.

So if it makes you feel better, this is not a weird impulse purchase. A pet monkey or a shrunken head, perhaps, but not a combo console...

I have a Gen-X and that's all I had to play Genesis and NES games up until now. Yesterday for Christmas I received a Genesis and an NES so I was wondering what I was going to do with my Gen-X. I figured I'll keep it for when the original system stop working or I want to bring it somewhere. This way my original consoles won't get all beaten in transit. So to answer your question, no, you are not going insane because these dual consoles are worth it.

Yeah, I actually decided against it when I went to the flea market today. The guy waned to give me $5 a piece for my two NES consoles, didn't want the Genesis, $5 for a modded Playstation, didn't want the N64, and $7 for the Gamecube... needless to say, I refused his offer.

He was selling the Retro-Duo for $80 and a Gen-Mobile for $60...

And the only thing I actually wanted, R.O.B., which he has had sitting at his booth for months, he apparently sold last weekend.

Oh, totally. I've decided that I'm going to put them up for sale in the B/S/T thread here pretty soon. I'm sure someone here may actually be able to use them, since they will just sit in storage if I keep them.

I did end up getting a gold and red "limited edition" Retro Duo from eBay for $40 shipped, and blue GenMobile portable Genesis for the same price. I've wanted a Nomad for awhile, so that may hold me over. So the three new retro systems, along with a Sega CD I finally purchased from someone here on the boards, should be on their way soon!

the retro duo is a great alternative to the original nes's (which never work) and the overpriced toploading nes. It also means one less system I need hooked up since it plays snes games perfectly (as far as I can tell)

An original NES just usually needs a new 72 pin to get rid of the years of corrosion from people blowing on games, plus properly cleaning all the games too. Once everything is clean and no new spit is being added, they'll be fine for some time before any rebending of pins or anything drastic is needed again.

I haven't tried any of the duo machines, but I still have yet to see a clone that the sound and colors aren't at least a little bit off. I also haven't seen a clone that will play Castlevania III either.

Yeah, I've replaced pin connectors on three separate NES consoles and that usually does the trick. Once the new connector is in place, the games that are being used with it should really be cleaned thoroughly though. I've learned all of this from Hobie a few months back when I was having problems with my NES.

I am excited to try the Duo and the Gen X though. I'll definitely still use my original consoles, but these are just cool new toys for me to mess with. I'm especially excited about the GenMobile. I know some people have problems with them, but it may inspire me to pick up a Nomad finally.
