Oh I agree with you JT, this is a simple correlation that doesn't account for any number of intermediate variables. Your point about the measure of game sales is also well taken. We won't even get into issues about variation in crime recording/reporting (especially for juveniles, which is historically "fuzzy").

Nevertheless, I think experimental designs suffer from at least one of the same weaknesses as this data; they lack context. Of course, the trade off is, as you mentioned, the opportunity to control for other variables. Clearly a holistic understanding of this issue requires a mixed methods approach.

When youth crimes are blamed on media, it is meerly a cover-up for the poor parenting.
Systems: SNES, PS1, GBA SP, Gamecube, DS Lite, Wii, PS3 (Fully Backwards Compatible), Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, a Sega CD, and a Sega Saturn.
