Check out Dragon Crystal. It's a Rogue-like (think Diablo or Gauntlet) with a catchy soundtrack and challenging gameplay. There are 30 levels, and each level has a completely randomized map each time you play. Lots of enemies, lots of items. It is possible for a randomized level to accidentally make it impossible to reach the exit, but this doesn't ruin the experience.

There's also Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya, a strategy RPG which is part of the larger Shining Force series by Sega. Haven't played it, but probably worth it if you've enjoyed any of the other games in the series.

Second Dragon Crystal as the game is cheap.

I'll second Sword of Hajya, though if you have Shining Force CD I'd pass. Shining Force CD is a graphical overhaul of Shining Force Gaiden 1 & 2 (Gaiden 2 is Sword of Hajya, and the only GG title to make it here). So you get the same maps and gameplay but on the Genny Shining Force engine and the Redbook Audio.

I'll third Shining Force, some epic battles to be had. I want to play the Shining Force CD version though. I'll say whichever you can find cheaper/easier.

Edit: Yeah Shining force CD is going for around 100 bucks in the US, unless u have a rom. While shining force for game gear is around 20 on ebay again unless u have a rom.

No one's mentioned Defenders of Oasis. It's a good RPG if you prefer a simple, Dragon Warrior-esque battle system.

Defenders of Oasis is good. Tails Adventure is also good, though not a hard core RPG (as you might imagine).
