Should I Get Myself Committed?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Should I Get Myself Committed?

Post by h8b1llg8ts »

Please be honest should I turn myself in for voluntary commitment?

It first started off with my black label PSOne games, or simply the mismatched Greatest Hits and black label games. Each “upgrade”, I like to call it, cost me about two to three dollars more for each game. Then I moved onto each of my DVD cased games. oXbox, PS2, Dreamcast (only one really), and 360 games. Exchanging all for original released cover art and matching DVD cases (ie non red or silver DVD cases). I could have just simply replaced the case and printed the cover art for free but it would be original.

Now that I’m finished there, I have found myself with a new conundrum. Upgrading each of my games that was released in either a Limited Edition, Collectors Edition, Special Edition, ect. And I’m finding games that I have beaten years ago but I now must have just because it has a DVD included. Or worse special artwork or an online code with online maps that no one is even playing online now. I don’t play them anymore and in some cases (Turning Point – 360) don’t even like but I now must have the Limited Edition.

Not bad, it gets worse. I do have some exceptions:

If the Special Edition is Halo I will not get it (long story).

If the SE is Game of the Year but originally was released in separate disc versions (ie Oblivion, Fallout 3, GTA 4) I will not purchase it instead I will buy them individually even though it will cost more.

If the SE is larger then two DVD cases (ie Assassins’ Creed , BlazBlue, Street Fighter 4) I will not purchase them because they don’t esthetically match my library.

If the game was released in a co-op pack but never released in SE edition (Sega Superstar Tennis / Xbox Arcade Vol. 1) I must have them separate. Except Sega GT 2000/JGRF because it was included in my original Xbox purchase.

And lastly, if the game was released in a SE cover (ie Counter Strike oXbox, Star Wars Jedi Battles PSOne) I will keep the less inferior version and not have dual copies on cross platformed systems.

If it gives you an outlet for OCD impulses, but does not hurt you or cause you to otherwise ignore those around you or responsibilities, financial or otherwise, then no I don't think its a problem. Hooray for run-on sentences.

Just learn to let it go. There's nothing wrong with a good looking and complete collection, but some things are just not worth worrying about. I do however also like matching DVD cases for my games, but the having all "black label" stuff is overkill.

On another note, I thought the GOTY edition of Oblivion had better art than the two separate releases of the game and Shivering Isles. Not to mention, Knights of the Nine is also included with the GOTY release.

Man, I would NOT allow my self to be that obsessed with my collection. My only requirements is that the game be in good shape and have the original artwork. If I get the manual it is a bonus (unless it is a jewel case then it must be complete).

Think about it, you can take the money you would spend on rebuying those old games and use it to purchase even more games to enjoy!

No. You should not have your yourself committed for being OCD. Even if your OCD had a strong negative impact on your life, going to the crazy house wouldn't help. Not many people are aware, but patients often get much worse due to taking drugs and/or shock therapy.

Just think about it for a minute. How the fuck are drugs and electrocuting your brain supposed to help your mental condition? They don't treat the actual cause of the problem at all. If you must seek out professional help, you might want to see a counselor. Just be sure to refuse all drugs he prescribes.

tl;dr
Communication is the solution, not expensive drugs that will fuck you up even worse.

Just lock yourself in a room with all games placed in Blockbuster rental cases and generic artwork printed from Gamestop. It'll be hell, but you'll be fine once the withdrawals are over.

I can actually somewhat relate to what you're saying, but not at such a high level. My advice would be to just let it go, or rather not feed the obsession. If you find that you can resist it, then I don't think that you have much to worry about.

I just get games I want to play. Most of my games are cart-only (GB, GBC, GBA). I put them in DS cases with printed artwork. They look nice. Sometimes I have manuals. That's a nice bonus. But I don't kill myself over any of it. Ultimately, my collection exists because I want to play the games.
