Final Fantasy VII, and it's still my favourite. I was into pen & paper RPGs when I was younger. Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay - that kind of shite. Final Fantasy VII blew me away. Some kid in class recommended it, soon after I saw it sitting on a shelf in Bollockbuster, took it home... played it 'til the third random battle and the disc started skipping. I was heart broken, it was Friday night and we lived quite a way from the video store, I tried everything to get it to work... even swapping the disc for disc 2 during the skipping battle... to my amazement, it started working again. I played all the way through disc 1 that very night, everything worked except the FMV sequences. They were all messed up, playing bits of disc 2's cut scenes during disc 1! It's a testament to how much fun I was having that I kept playing. I was really none the wiser, I just thought the game was deliberately surreal and nonsensical. Heh. I've been searching on and off for an RPG as intriguing as FFVII for years, haven't found it though. Maybe it was atrocious translation that drew me in, gave the game more of a mysterious vibe. Xenogears on PSX came close, an absolute mess of a game - but really quite compelling.

Well,
both let you stick things in them for amusement...
both usually end up costing you a fortune over time...
and both whine incessantly...

The original Dragon Warrior. Got it free with my Nintendo Power subscription like most everyone else. Who knew it would be the catalyst for my love of RPGs.

Did you ever try Final Fantasy Tactics? Breath of Fire 3, Suikoden? I played FF7 first but played the others afterwards and really enjoyed them very much.pelham123 wrote:Final Fantasy VII, and it's still my favourite. I was into pen & paper RPGs when I was younger. Kings Quest on the Apple if that even counts (what a cruel game to play as a really young kid). My first actual RPG outside of that was Dragon Warrior for the NES when it came out; what kid could resist that amazing cover? After that, I was hooked. Even got magazines and pictures of Final Fantasy when it was only for Famicom from my fathers Japanese friend at the airport.
This catapulted my love for RPG's and definitely where my collection started (and has grown so much)!

Re: Your First RPG
Zelda:Link's Awekening (as mentioned in another post aswell) was the first game I played at age 8, but if you don't count that one as an RPG (which you probably don't) it's around 10 years later that I played Chronotrigger.
For most of the other RPG until then I was a spectator. Some brother of mine probably was playing and I just watched. RPGs were always a family thing, like watching a movie. Not much gameplay but lots of storyline.

Dragon Warrior for NES. I was real little and it took me years on and off to beat it. Finished it like 4-5 times since.
Re: Your First RPG
Super Mario RPG was technically my first, but I barely played it because I had no idea what "RPG" meant and was just pissed that it didn't play like the other Mario games.
I didn't experience any other RPGs until watching a friend play through FF VII. It blew me away. The day FF VIII was released I bought it, and a PlayStation to play it on. I loved it but never made it past the first disc. In fact, I never completed an RPG until Final Fantasy 3 on the DS.

Funnily enough, I was also very pissed when I played Super Mario RPG. I just didn't get it at all - I remember also expecting to be able to play as all the characters right off the bat. I almost had my parents return the game, but for some reason we had to wait 'til the next day to return it. So, I ended up playing it since I had nothing better to do. When tomorrow came, I didn't want to give it back.blaix wrote:Super Mario RPG was technically my first, but I barely played it because I had no idea what "RPG" meant and was just pissed that it didn't play like the other Mario games.
