16-Bit First-Person Shooters: Help List Them

Post by racketboy »

I just recieved an email with an idea for a future article:
"I was just thinking to myself that it would be a neat idea to put together an article detailing the various 16-bit first-person-shooters out there. There were games like Zero Tolerance and Blood Shot on the Genesis, Doom and Wolf 3D on SNES... you could even include strange, obscure ones like Drakken on the SNES, even though it wasn't really a FPS. You could include unreleased betas, too, like Duke 3D and Zero Tolerance 2 on the Genesis. Sometimes it's interesting to see what kind of crazy stuff developers tried to push these systems to do."

I thought it was rather interesting.
Can anybody think of any others to feature?

don't forget Super 3D Noah's Ark for Super NES :P

I can't really remember any others than those you listed for the moment, but I remember really, really wanting a few of them when they came out.

Zero Tolerance had me entertained for a few rentals. I really cant think of any others. There was that Toy Story 2 minigame that a lot of people consider technically impressive.

Yes on Faceball, also the D&D games like Eye of the Beholder were first person.

First person, yes. Shooters, no, therefore ineligible.

The problem you run into there is that first person dungeon RPGs are a dime a dozen and common on every platform going back to 8-bit computing.

While a minor detail, Duke 3D wasn't a beta, it was a fully released game...just only sold in Brazil. Here's what's on Wikipedia:
In 1998, it was also ported to the Sega Mega Drive by Tec Toy. The obscurity of this port (it was released only in Brazil) has frequently led to it being mistaken for an unlicensed "hack". It is not based on any other game made for the Mega Drive, instead it was programmed from the ground up by Tec Toy. 3D Realms claims that the port is not legal, but Tec Toy maintains that it was licensed by now-defunct publisher GT Interactive.
