My grandparents got me a Saturn
My grandparents got me a Saturn
Early christmas present. I was more than pleased.
So I of course plan on modding it. This is gonna be the one console that I won't buy legit copies for. Before I get the chip and take the plunge, are there any suggestions I should think about? (besides Saturn bomberman and 9 more controllers.)
It also came with a couple of real games. Tested it out for a bit and it works just fine. Some baseball game and Croc... That game keeps coming back to haunt me in many different ways... Like an annoying small child.

Radiant Silvergun. Still the best shmup after all these years. Shining Force 3. Panzer Dragoon series. NiGHTS. Christmas NiGHTS too, as this is the time of year to be playing it since the game utilizes the internal clock.
There's a lot more, but that'll get you started.

One hack I've been looking at is installing a region switch. Since it's so easy to change the region on the Saturn you can pretty easily add a switch for easy region changing.
The only reason I haven't is that I don't have any non-region 1 games...
EDIT: Nevermind, remembered that you don't need to change the region on the system with copied games, as you can change the region of the games through software.

Awesome.
Also, not that I'm against backups for a dead system but most of the best/most common Saturn games are dirt cheap on the second hand market, so don't completely give up on the real deal!

Second Shining Force 3. And if you're gonna mod it, you can play SF3 Scenario 2 and 3 once they're finished being translated! I can't wait myself.
There's lots of great games for the console. I liked Shining the Holy Ark a lot. Metal Slug is great on it. Also, the port of Symphony of the Night is a must if you're a fan. The Saturn version has pros and cons, but it's pros include a lot more content (4 new areas - two in each castle - which include a new boss, new enemies, and new items) than the PS1 version.
You have a model 2 Saturn? Do you have a memory card and/or video RAM cartridge. If not, I highly suggest getting one. A Pro Action Replay will act as a memory card (but you can't save to it from within games), a cheat device as well as give you the extra video RAM to play a hand full of games. X-Men VS Street Fighter is a lot of fun (requires the extra RAM). Otherwise I recommend just getting a regular old Sega brand memory card.

For shame. For shame...newt42 wrote:This is gonna be the one console that I won't buy legit copies for. Before I get the chip and take the plunge...
FYI, the Saturn's biggest flaw is its cartridge slot. It's not mounted well and most (yes, I said most) Saturns have trouble reading cartridges, more so with the RAM expansion carts than with memory carts.

Re: My grandparents got me a Saturn
Actually from everything I've seen all official Sega produced carts will NOT damage the cart slot, but because of an error on Sega's part all third party manufacturers were given a board thickness for their carts that was slightly too wide resulting in a gradual stretching of the pins on the cart slot over time as third party carts (GameShark Action Replay, etc....) are used.Breetai wrote:For shame. Yeah, that slot is a piece of work. Good to have some rubbing alcohol nearby at all times.
Also, I recommend Bulk Slash. And stay away from the Doom port. It's got to be the worst version of Doom ever, despite the back of the box saying it's the best.
